Mike O’Halloran reports on Kerry’s victory over Down in the All-Ireland Minor B Hurling Semi-Final yesterday…

The Kerry Minor Hurlers, have reached the All-Ireland Minor B Hurling Final with a chance to win five titles in a row.

They overcame, a resilient Down team, on a scoreline of Kerry 2.19 Down 1.15.

Kerry and Down were level at three points all early in the game, with Down looking impressive.

On 14 minutes, Kerry led 1-5 to 0-4, the goal was a thing of beauty from Barry O’Mahony when he controlled an over-hit pass from Shane Conway and blasted to the net.

Points from Brian McAuliffe, Maurice O’Connor, Barry O’Mahony, Eric Leen and Shane Conway, put Kerry ahead by nine points.

Two further points from Conway and Sheehy, made the score at halftime, Kerry 1-12 Down 0-7.

Down started the second half brightly, but then they were reduced to 14 men on five minutes

Kerry then moved Barry O’Mahony to a sweeper role, a move that seemed to give Down more room at their end.

They were able to clear more ball unchallenged, with O’Mahony’s huge threat  removed from the Kerry attack.

Down came within two points of Kerry, 1-10 to 1-12, when Conor McCrickard goaled for Down, on ten minutes.

The threat Down posed was snuffed out however, by huge work from Tomas O’Connor and Eric Leen.

Leen won a foot-race with the fullback, to kick a bullet to the net, with four minutes to go.

The goal from Leen, ended the Down challenge, and Kerry ended the game winning by seven points.
