FORMER Austin Stacks GAA dual player Trevor Barrett was remembered on Saturday with a memorial hurling tournament in his name.

“Trevor was the heartbeat of the club, his death is still very raw. This tournament has been fitting tribute, but also quite poignant” said Mark Power, Austin Stacks Senior Hurling Manager.

Twenty-nine year old Trevor Barrett took ill suddenly at the beginning of April and died later that month on Easter Sunday in Cork University Hospital.

Of the eight teams that took part, Causeway ran out eventual winners, beating Stacks by 1-10 to 1-6 in the final. However there was a consolation for Stacks after losing the final with Peter O’Regan winning player of the Tournament.

“The matches were excellent and epitomised everything that was good about Trevor,” said Mark.

The tournament featured eight sides overall, five from Kerry: Austin Stacks, Causeway, Crotta O’Neills, Abbeydorney and St Patrick’s East Kerry.

Three teams are came from further afield: Lis Ocra and Lismire, both from Cork and Wolfe Tones from Clare.

As well as remembering Trevor, the tournament also raised funds for Bru Columbanus, the independently run charity that provided accommodation for Trevor’s family while he was in intensive care in Cork.

After the presentation of the shield to the Causeway, food and entertainment was put on along with a raffle of spot prizes that were donated by local businesses.
