TRALEE will miss a great local character around the town as John Moynihan has hung up his brush and bin and retired after 40 years of service to the Council.

Popular among his workmates and townsfolk, Scartaglin native John – who has been living in Caherina for the last 47 years – was honoured outside the Ashe Memorial Hall on Friday by the Mayor of Tralee, Tom McEllistrim.

“I’m delighted to be here as Mayor to thank John for his hard work over the years,” said Mayor McEllistrim. “As you know, we won the Gold Medal in Tidy Towns over the past few years and John played his part in that. We thank him on behalf of the workers, the council officials and the town. And also on behalf of the councillors as we always found John as a great guy,” he said.

Frank Hartnett of Kerry County Council also thanked John.

“We want to thank him for his great work and contribution to the Tidy Towns. He’ll be very much missed by his colleagues as he is very popular,” said Frank.

A number of John’s colleagues were present to see him receive a crystal vase from the Council while his workmates also made a presentation to him.

“I’m delighted to see my workmates here today and say goodbye to them,” John told TraleeToday.ie. “I’ll miss them because I’m great friends with every one of them. It’s nice to into work in the morning and see the lads in front of you. It was great to see people around town and you get to know so many people,” said John.

Any plans for retirement?

“I’d like to go back to my own country around Scartaglin and meet all the boys out there. Maybe stay a few nights and listen to the Scartaglin music!” said John. Enjoy your retirement John, you’ll be missed around the streets.
