Students taking part in Mental Health Week 2016 at Presentation Tralee.
THE Student Representative Council at Presentation Secondary School, Tralee co-ordinated the Annual Mental Health Awareness week in Presentation Tralee last week as a range of activities and talks were provided for all students by representatives of agencies such as Kerry Jigsaw and Aware.
While different groups were scheduled for formal talks and workshops during the week, there were lots of other awareness activities and poster displays taking place including information for students over the school intercom from the Head Girls, Niamh Myers and Mairead Dowling.

A Challenge box was set up in the School Assembly area where students were asked to take one slip of paper from the box and then, according to the colour of the paper, choose an activity from the matching activity sheet. Tuesday saw the creation of a Smilezone by an enthusiastic group of 5th years and is still on the main corridor of the school, marked with an entry and exit banner to encourage all students to smile while passing through the area.
Students arrived to school on Wednesday to find post-its on their school lockers with words of wisdom for the day, causing great excitement as people compared their own individual mantras. They also received bookmarks from Kerry Jigsaw with the “5-a-day- for mental health on them which included: Connect with friends and family; Be Active; Take notice of the world around you; Keep learning; and Give to others.
A sponsored silence was held by non-exam classes for a single class period on Friday, reminding people not to suffer in silence when coping with difficulties. Students were encouraged to approach someone for help as that’s the hardest part and things will then soon improve.
