THE Killorglin based Junior Entrepreneur Programme has announced that the programme has been adapted for online participation by primary school pupils, ensuring it runs throughout Ireland in 2021, despite the impact of the pandemic.

Dedicated Kerry Primary school teachers are demonstrating their entrepreneurial credentials by signing up for the Junior Entrepreneur Programme in the midst of the lockdown.

JEP is a programme which has empowered more than 80,000 children to start businesses in their primary school classrooms around Ireland since 2010.

Organisers of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme have been pleasantly surprised by the number of teachers that got in touch in the last few months to enquire if the programme would run this year.

“Teachers were delighted to hear that the programme would be offered and many of them said their pupils had been talking about it since the start of the year” explained JEP Co-founder Marie Lynch.

Marie O’Connell, sixth class teacher at Ardfert Central National School said that regardless of the challenges of remote learning she wanted to do the programme with her class this year because she believes that ‘the pupils have lost out on so much already’.

“I believe that JEP is one of the defining experiences of the children’s primary school years” she added. She was among the first teachers to deliver JEP when it launched in 2010. Ardfert National School has participated in the programme every time since the programme started and pupils have successfully created an impressive range of businesses including the ‘King of the Kingdom’ board game, an Ardfert through the centuries video, tie-dyed hoodies and a local Quiz book, all of which became very successful classroom businesses.

JEP continued to run in schools following the closure last March. Schools from all over the Island of Ireland who had started on their JEP journey prior to the first lockdown submitted their projects to JEP HQ in Killorglin, where the projects were assessed and the work was recognised with certificates of achievement and merit awards.

Among the other Kerry Schools that have signed up this year are Scoil Mhic Easmainn, Tralee; Spa National School; Tralee Educate Together; KIlcummin National School and Scoil Iosef, Ballyheigue.

The deadline for sign up has been extended to Tuesday, 2nd of February. For further information, go to www.juniorentrepreneur.ie
