A LOCAL woman is taking on a swimming challenge this summer with the aim of raising €5,000 for Down Syndrome Kerry.

Rachel Fitzgerald aims to swim from Derrymore Strand to Fenit beach — a distance of about 5k — sometime between August 1st and 15th, depending on weather.

Rachel has started a gofundme page where she explained her motivation for taking on the ‘Across The Bay’ challenge.

“I am a mum of three and our youngest daughter, Peppy, has Down syndrome. We got involved with the charity Down Syndrome Kerry shortly after Peppy was born 12 years ago. The organisation  helps Peppy in so many ways. They provide Speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, parent support groups and so much more.”

“Like every charity, Down Syndrome Kerry lost many of its fundraisers this year, and I thought it was time to give back to an organisation that has helped us so much as a family. All the money I raise will go directly to Down Syndrome Kerry,” said Rachel.
