THE disappearance of a Ballybunion man who vanished without trace more than two years ago, is the subject of a documentary on Radio Kerry to be broadcast on Monday.

‘What happened to Willie Mulvihill’ was researched by journalist and broadcaster Deirdre Walsh, who’s also a native of Ballybunion and knew the 54-year-old growing up.

Speaking to friends, family members, Gardai and those involved in the search for Mr Mulvihill, the documentary follows his last movements up to the time he vanished on August 21, 2016, when Tralee was at the height of the Rose festival.

“He wasn’t the type to wander off and it’s extraordinary that no trace of him was ever found,” she says.

“It’s pretty rare for someone to vanish like this in Kerry. I’ve worked as a journalist in the county for 30 years and I can’t recall a single other case like this. His family are convinced that somebody out there knows what happened to Willie, and for whatever reason they haven’t come forward.”

Also featured is Dermot Browne from Athlone, who set up the National Missing Person’s Helpline and website in 2004,  when his son Derek went missing.  The documentary goes out on Radio Kerry at 10am on Monday, December 31.
