TO mark World Cancer Day, Recovery Haven Kerry will host an Open Day and Afternoon Tea at its base at 5 Haig’s Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee on Tuesday next, February 4, from 1-3pm.

Everyone is invited to pop in for a cuppa and see for themselves the wonderful services provided by the cancer support charity which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

Manager Siobhan MacSweeney explained that as well as marking World Cancer Day on Tuesday, Recovery Haven staff and volunteers also want to use the opportunity to invite the public to see the extensive range of free support services that are available to them and their families while dealing with cancer.

“On the day people can meet with our staff and volunteers and get a proper feel for the place and learn more about exactly what it is that we do,” she said.

“Despite it being our 10th anniversary this year, some people are still not fully aware of what we do and who we are there to support. Some people feel they need to be cancer-free to come to us, other people think it’s for cancer patients only, when in fact we offer support to family and carers also. So this is the perfect opportunity for us to welcome some new faces and show everyone the full extent of what we do here.”

For those who may not be aware, Recovery Haven offers a drop-in and phone service that provide confidential listening and emotional support to those dealing with cancer, who would like to talk or seek advice.

One to one counselling sessions, complementary therapies and group activities, meanwhile, aim to give individuals constructive practical and emotional support, enhance their coping skills and therefore improve their physical and mental well-being and quality of life.

The charity has its main base in Tralee with outreach services in Killarney (twice a month) and Killorglin (once a month).
