Cork 1-10

The Kerry camogie team and coaches after winning the Munster Junior Final on Sunday.

Coming of the back of an impressive victory against Waterford in Walsh Park the previous weekend, Kerry faced Cork in the Munster Junior Camogie Final in Killeedy Co.Limerick.

Playing in difficult conditions, Cork registered the first two scores, with Aisling Wallace and  Christine O’Neill giving the rebels an early advantage.

Kerry were finding the scores tough early on coming up against a tough and resilient Cork defence, but Patrice Diggin would again make herself heard as she reduced the deficit.

With roughly 12 minutes played the next score would come this time from a Cork free by Christine O’Neill as both sides were finding it tough early on playing on a very slippy surface.

Kerry began to launch a counter attack of their own and found themselves ahead on the 15th minute mark as first captain Aoife Behan pointing from play and then Patrice Diggin pointing from a free.

Kerry were finding themselves in the driving seat as with 26 minutes played they lead 0-8 to 0-3 with Patrice Diggin managing another 4 scores.

Cork found their feet again late in the half as Rachel Harty first scored then was awarded a penalty having been fouled in the Kerry area but the shot was well saved on the line by Sara Murphy.

As the second half began, the sun made its appearance as Kerry held a 3 point lead. Cork came out fighting and reduced Kerry’s lead to 1 single point as first Rachel Harty and then Christine O’Neill managed to get their side back in the game.

Cork were managing a serious fightback and eventually cracked through the Kerry defence as substitute Michelle Brown hit a tight angled shot that managed to dip over the head of Kerry goalkeeper Alannah Maunsell into the net.

Both sides were fighting hard to win this game but again frees were costing Cork as Patrice Diggin was again just adding to her sizeable tally.

On the 50th minute mark, Cork again got their heads up as the impressive Rachel Harty was proving a nightmare for the Kerry defence.

Kerry heads were beginning to drop as errors were starting to come up with every attack falling just short but once more Patrice Diggin showed exactly why she has received a nomination for the Littlewoods Division 3 player of the league as she hit over an absolute monster of a point from just inside the 65m line.

Deep into injury time Kerry managed to take their score to put themselves 1 point up as Patrice scored yet again.

Drama however would later ensue before the fulltime whistle would sound, first Michelle Browne drilled a shot toward goal that the ref decided to call back with many people saying the ball had crossed the line.

Eventually the ref gave Cork a free shortly after and Christine O’Neill sent the game into Extra Time.

1-09 to 0-12 was the score as the ball was thrown in for extra time with the nerves beginning to get to everyone on the pitch and in the ground.

Eight nervy minutes went by in the first half of extra time before a score would be taken and yet again Patrice managed to give her side the advantage pointing from a 20m free.

Yet again the nerves were showing as Kerry left Sinead Mills free and unmarked 20m out who pointed from play to level the proceedings yet again.

Next came the final 10 minutes, where it was do or die for both sides.

The advantage fell to Kerry just 2 minutes into the half as Patrice scored another free, this time 35m out.

Late into the half Cork were putting the Kerry defence under some serious pressure with Alannah Maunsell proving to be a brick wall in between the sticks keeping Cork out late on.

With Cork having possession deep in the Kerry half it looked as if they would score but a fantastic break by Patrice Diggin led to free for Kerry which Sara Murphy took as the referee sounded the fulltime whistle as Kerry won the Munster Junior Camogie Championship final on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-10.
