Garvey’s Tralee Warriors produced arguably their best performance of the season as they outplayed and outclassed DCU Saints by 110-74 in St. Vincent’s on Saturday night.

The Warriors led at the end of each of the four quarters on their way to posting their first 100 plus point total of the campaign.

Trae Pemberton was again their scorer in chief with a stunning performance of offensive play underlined by a personal 41-point haul.

Pemberton was well supported with some fine shooting from outside by Darragh O’Hanlon and Pa McCarthy who registered 18 and 15 points respectively.

For Saints, Dee Proby yet again showed why he is one of the most respected players in the League with 43 points, scoring all but 31 of the Saints total score.

And it was home side that opened in fine style with the first four scores of the game to race to an eight point lead. Trae Pemberton responded with the first five of his 41 points before Dee Proby fired in a three for the hosts.

The Warriors wrestled back Saints early initiative with a dunk from Goran Pantovic and scores from Fergal O’Sullivan and Kieran Donaghy before a Darragh O’Hanlon three edged the visitors ahead for the first time.

Two successful doubles from the free throw line for Pemberton either side of another Proby three had the Warriors three to the good. Eoin Quigley and Dusan Bogdanovic both found their range to cancel out scores from Tariq Guebali and Proby and the Tralee side led 25-22 at quarter time.

O’Hanlon fired in two big threes for the Warriors early in the second after Guebali and Proby both hit two each from free throws.

Despite Proby and Martins Provizors finding the basket from outside the Warriors maintained their quarter time advantage before a flurry of scores from Pemberton, Donaghy and Fergal O’Sullivan suddenly had the visitors 10 points up approaching half time.

James Harding landed a score for Saints before Proby and Pemberton exchanged three pointers to leave the Warriors up by 49-42 at the long break.

DCU Saints scorer in chief Dee Proby opened the second half with a trademark basket from inside to help bridge the gap to five but what followed was an absolutely stunning offensive attack by the Warriors that effectively decided the contest.

The Tralee side fired in the next 19 points without reply in a breathless onslaught including five threes – two each from O’Hanlon and Fergal O’Sullivan and one from Pemberton to push their lead out to 70-46.

Provisors and Proby hit threes for DCU but Pantovic and two from the back in form Pa McCarthy had the lead out to 16 before Martin Neary and Provizors cut the advantage to 12 before Pemberton stepped in to shoot his fifth three of the game to put the Warriors 15 up as the sides turned for home.

Dee Proby’s importance to the DCU Saints cause was underlined by the fact that he shot 15 of his team’s 18 points in the final quarter.

However the one-man resistance provided by Proby was no match for the Warriors who opened up to shoot 29 in the final chapter of the contest.

Captain Darren O’Sullivan fired in to kick start the scoring spree and with Pemberton continuing his precision shooting and Pa McCarthy producing a fine cameo with 11 points including three threes as he and Pemberton shared six major scores as the clock ticked down.

In the end it was a case of the longer the game went on, the further the Warriors were going away. It really was a comprehensive and close to complete performance perfectly timed ahead of some greater challenges that lie ahead.

Scorers:

DCU Saints: Dee Proby 43, Martins Provizors 14, Martin Neary 5

Warriors: Trae Pemberton 41, Darragh O’Hanlon 18, Pa McCarthy 15

• Next up for the Warriors is the long awaited home fixture when they entertain Pyrobel Killester at the Tralee Sports Complex on Saturday 3rd February with an 8.00pm tip off.
