SOUTH Kerry took the spoils on a sun-splashed evening of championship football in Connolly Park, as two unanswered South Kerry goals either side of half-time sank Austin Stacks at the venue’s first Kerry SFC match in 26 years.

The two goals netted by Sean Cournane came at crucial times. With the teams level 0-6 apiece, the opening goal came in first half stoppage time and the second eight minutes after the interval.

The goals gave South Kerry a six point advantage which The Rock never looked likely to pull back and indeed only put two points on the board in the second half.

Some neat handpassing started by Bryan Sheehan and finished by Cournane cut open the Stacks defence for the first goal.

The second came from a long ball into the square by Killian Young to Cournane who made the best of some slack man-marking and neatly finished the ball to the net.

The six point cushion meant Austin Stacks went in search of goals. South Kerry were happy to sacrifice Sheehan going forward, so for most of the second half the Kerry captain was at full-back on Kieran Donaghy.

We saw a far better performance from the South Kerry attack this week. As Stacks began to shrink in the second half, Daniel Daly and Niall O’Shea came to fore with some fine scores and Aidan Walsh kept the forwards ticking over working and creating for the men inside.

It wasn’t always bleak for Stacks; they were 0-6 to 0-5 in front up to the 28th minute and had the share of the possession in the first half.

David Mannix, once again, looked their best source for scores but they didn’t make the most of him during The Rock’s purple patch. Mark Griffin had been named at full-back but tweaked something in the warm-up so didn’t play any part.
