Round 2B of The Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship ended in a win for Ballyduff, but the real story of this game was the great display by Ballyheigue who rose Pheonix like from the ashes of a crushing defeat by St Brendan’s.

The Ballyheigue players played with huge passion and no little skill to rekindle the pride of their parish.

Ballyduff played against a big wind in the first half and had the ball in the net after two minutes when Gary O’Brien received from Anthony Carroll.

That was in accordance with the script written by everybody, except this brave bunch of Ballyheigue men. Back at Ballyduff they came and by halftime they led by six points, Ballyduff 1-3 Ballyheigue 0-12

Everybody present thought that Ballyduff would pull away in the second half with the wind, but it was Adrian Flahive of Ballyheigue who had the opening point.

But Ballyduff came back and when Eoin Ross drove over a free on 23 minutes they took the lead. Philip Lucid replied to draw Ballyheigue level, but in the next four minutes Ballyduff scored one goal and two points to finally put an end to the huge challenge from Ballyheigue.

John Hussey was coolness personified when he received from Gary O’Brien to stroke the ball past John Mike Pierce.

Pride restored for Ballyheigue and a glimmer of hope for Ballyduff for the rest of the championship, with the return of Paud Costello and Barry O’Grady with Eoin Ross restored to his best position at halfback.

Michael Boyle was awesome in the second half, his brother Padraigh has another couple of weeks to rehab and perhaps may be ready to take some part in the next round.
