Tralee CBS swept past Mounthawk in a humdinger of a Frewen Cup quarter-final mainly thanks to a third quarter goal glut that proved insurmountable to their neighbours.

Played on the ultra-fast surface of the newly refurbished pitch in Connolly Park, the scores came thick and fast in the opening period with goals exchanged by Donagh McMahon (Mounthawk) and Dara Keane (Green).

Nip and tuck throughout the opening half, the quality of football was high with Mounthawk opening up a four point gap at one stage thanks to a Damien Docherty goal.

This was, however, immediately cancelled out as handball kingpin Keane struck again for the Green to level affairs 2-7 apiece at the break.

Playing with the aid of a slight breeze the Green stepped on the gas after half time and never looked back.

With John Walsh buzzing in midfield, goals from Jason Mortimer, a pile driver from Sean Quilter and another from star forward Mickey Kelleher put the Green suddenly out of reach.

Mounthawk to their credit never gave up and netted again through Daragh Courtney but this was quickly cancelled out with the sixth and final Green goal from Kelleher bringing personal tally to 2-6.

Having won the Kerry Dunlop Cup, The Green will feel they have passed an important test in defeating their town rivals on route to a potential double with the Munster Frewen.

With St Brendan’s Killarney having also progressed to meet St Flannans of Ennis, Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne however lie in wait for another big test in the semi final on February 28.
