A blitz in the second half saw the Kerry minor hurlers overcome Kildare in The Electric Ireland All-Ireland B Championship quarter final.

Kerry trailed by two points at halftime, 1-7 to 2-6 and faced into a stiff wind in the second half.

Kildare had dominated for most of the first half and would have gone in further in front only for an error by their goalkeeper, Jeff Keane, on six minutes, when he misread a long delivery from Shane Conway, that went straight to the net.

Barry O’Mahony, who was to be the difference in the second half, had three points for the Kingdom.

The remaining points in the first half came from Shane Conway, Colin Sheehy and Maurice O’Connor, all men who had seen senior action in the Garveys SuperValu Kerry County Hurling Championship this year.

Kildare had racked up a few yellow cards in the first half, these yellows contributed somewhat to their defeat in the second half. The lost their full back, Richie Hogan, to a second yellow on twenty minutes. Kildare only trailed by two points at that stage.

Almost immediately after Hogan’s dismissal, Eric Leen goaled for Kerry. Shane Conway had pointed the free that led to Hogan’s second yellow just before, so the margin was now out to six points.

Kildare only managed one more point before the end, as they concentrated on goals.

Kerry added points from Conway, Colin Sheehy and Maurice O’Connor.

The movement of Barry O’Mahony out the field, certainly paid dividends for Kerry.  Crotta O’Neills man, O’Mahony is one of the finest prospects I have ever seen in Kerry hurling.

Kerry are now in a semi-final in a couple of weeks and if they win that they will contest their fifth Peadar O’Liathain Cup in a row. On today’s second half display it is hard to see anybody beating them.
