KIND-HEARTED employees from the revenue office at Spa Road decided to raise funds for the new palliative care unit at University Hospital Kerry recently.

Two weeks ago the workers decided to hold a cake sale where the staff brought in home baking and the staff donated into jars, raising around €600.

It’s all going towards the new 15-bed palliative care unit which is now completed up in University Hospital Kerry and will be handed over to Kerry Hospice in the coming weeks. It’s hoped the facility will be opened in September and patients would arrive in October.

“The people of Kerry have supported our 15 bed unit, they’ve supported the whole hospice for the past 27 years and everybody who has contributed to the cheque presented here is part of that new unit,” said Mairead Fernane, Treasurer of Kerry Hospice.

While the opening of the new facility will go ahead later this year, the fundraising goes on in earnest because funding for staff to the tune of up to €500,000 a year must be sourced from Kerry Hospice.
