Finally, completing our review of stories we brought you in 2018, here’s the news from December…

• It was reported that 11 patients had their cancer diagnoses delayed at University Hospital Kerry and four of those patients had since.

The news came as a result of the review of the 46,000 radiology scans at University Hospital Kerry concerning the work of a locum consultant who no longer works at the hospital.

Concerns emerged during the summer of 2017, when three serious reportable events were notified regarding the locum radiologist and an initial audit of a sample of scans was conducted.

A further eight serious reportable events had been uncovered and that the delayed diagnoses had a serious impact on their health.

• PROTESTS were held against the closure of Tralee Women’s Resource Centre.

The organisers were asking for the opportunity to present options for the future of the centre and call on the directors, board members and/or funders to meet them and discuss how they can save the Resource Centre.

• THERE was great sadness when the body of a woman who was missing from Listowel for a few days was located. The body of Eavan Murphy (37) was removed to the morgue at University Hospital Kerry where a post mortem took place.

• KERRY GAA has lost another great from the past with the death of Jerome O’Shea at the age of 87 after a brief illness. The Cahersiveen native won three All-Ireland senior medals with the Kingdom in 1953, 1955 and 1959.

• A MEMBER of the Irish Red Cross in Tralee won a Volunteer Ireland Award  last night Cormac Sertutxa was nominated in the Community Category at the awards which took place at the Carlton Hotel in Blanchardstown, Dublin and was named winner.

• A WALK, held a month ago from Kerins O’Rahillys clubhouse,  raised a phenomenal amount of money for three organisations.

The Grace Moran Memorial Walk was held on Sunday, November 11 and people turned out in their hundreds to remember the popular Kerries lady who died in November, 2017.

When all the money was collected from sponsorship cards and donations, the total raised came to €17,664 which will be shared evenly between  Pieta House, Tralee MS and Cuan Mhuire.

• FUNDING of €1,198,846.73 was announced for Kerry Airport towards operating expenses.

This Government funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport will go towards the operating costs associated with providing essential services in the areas of safety and security and is in addition to a further over €1 million announced by Kerry Fine Gael TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, for Kerry Airport earlier this year for capital works.

• STUDENTS from secondary schools in Tralee won two of the three categories in the annual Poetry Aloud competition out of 1,700 entries from 143 schools all over Ireland. And one of the Tralee students was also declared Overall Winner.

Majella Votta from Mercy Mounthawk was declared the Overall Winner and she also won the Senior Category, while Presentation Secondary School Tralee student, Palesa Hlongnane, won the Junior Category.

• TRALEE received some good news as 100 jobs were announced for the IDA advanced manufacturing facility in Dromtacker.

Pharmaceutical company, Central Pharma, are to move into the facility and will create the jobs over a five year period.

Central Pharma is based in the UK and CEO Alwyn Smit said he was very impressed when he visited the location in Tralee with the IDA. The fact that the IT Tralee is located nearby was also a huge plus.

• THERE was great news for one lucky punter when they won €1,000,000 in the National Lottery Daily Millions draw on Friday, December 28. They bought their ticket in Applegreen in Manor.
