REVIEW 2018: The News From June…

Continuing our review of stories we brought you in 2018, here’s the news from June…

• THERE were some fabulous paintings on display at the first day of a new initiative, ‘Art In The Park’ from Tralee Chamber Alliance in early June.

Artists from all over the county were invited to sign up for the initiative which will see them put their work on the railings of the town park on Denny Street on every Saturday during the summer.

• THE fruits of the hard work of the Committee of the University Hospital Kerry and Social Club were presented to the Chemotherapy Day Unit.

Their ‘Sickly Come Dancing’ event held back in February when 12 couples took to the floor of the Ballygarry House Hotel to raise funds for the unit and it eventually realised €67,737.06.

• A Tralee cafe/restaurant was named Ireland’s favourite family restaurant by a national radio station.

Organised by Today FM’s Weekend Breakfast programme, Yummy Cafe on Dominick Street was the only Kerry restaurant on the shortlist for a competition to find where families can enjoy the best food in a family-friendly atmosphere. They were up against businesses in Dublin, Galway, Offaly, Waterford and Cork.

• AS Kerry basked in a hot spell, Banna Rescue was asking people to park responsibly when visiting the beach. Some visitors blocked the slipway for the lifeboat with their cars over the weekend.

The heatwave in June saw huge numbers flock to the popular beach but some were causing problems for the vital, life-saving service that is Banna Rescue. A number of vehicles also blocked the lifeboat Emergency Shutters at the boathouse.

• A TEENAGER from Tarbert received serious burns to her hands when the car she was travelling in with her father burst into flames during a rally event.

Eighteen-year-old Megan Costello was the co-driver for her father Jason, who is originally from Ballybunion, in a Circuit of Munster rally event when their car overturned near Newcastlewest.

The car burst into flames and and they had to be rescued from the vehicle by another competitor who came on the scene.

• JUST two years after being inducted into the Basketball Ireland Coaches Hall Of Fame, a Tralee man received its highest honour of the Basketball Ireland Presidents Award at a ceremony in The National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. and no better man to get it after giving 40 years to basketball in the county

Jimmy said he was delighted when he was informed by the President of Basketball Ireland, Teresa Walsh, that he would receive the honour, which recognises his contribution to basketball locally and nationally over 40 years.

• “Remarkable. At last I have a chance to see Kerry, ”said Prince Charles when asked how he was enjoying his visit to the county.

Security was tight at Siamsa Tire with a huge Garda presence all over Ivy Terrace, the Town Park and on Princes Street for the visit of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

They met pupils from CBS, Moyderwell, Presentation, Tralee Educate Together, Holy Family, St John’s Parochical School, Scoil Eoin and Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn and enjoyed a performance in Siamsa Tire before leaving for Killarney.

• A TRALEE woman was crowned Miss Kerry at a selection night in Killarney.

Twenty-year-old Brogan O’Sullivan from Killeen Wood, was chosen from  15 contestants from all over the county at the event in the Killarney Heights Hotel. Brogan, who works at Sports Direct in The Mall, had previously entered three years ago and really enjoyed the experience so decided to do it again.

• Kerry enjoyed a facile victory over Cork in the Páirc Ui Chaoimh sunshine and with a 3-18 to 2-4 scoreline retained their Munster SFC title.

• THE new Mayor of Tralee Municipal was elected. Labour’s Cllr Graham Spring was the only candidate put forward at the council meeting and took over from Cllr Norma Foley.

It was an emotional day for Cllr Foley as she took up the position of Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council.

The Tralee woman, who was first elected to Tralee Town Council in 1994, became Kerry’s ‘First Citizen’ for the first time, having already held the Mayor of Tralee role on three occasions,.

• A MARRIED couple from Kerry were celebrating a huge boost to their retirement coffers after they collected a massive Lotto Match 5 + Bonus prize of €149,347 in Dublin after buying their ticket  at the O’Connor’s Service Station in Rathass, Tralee.

The overjoyed pair plan to use their Lotto windfall to enjoy their retirement by travelling the world in style ‘without scrimping and saving’.
