REVIEW 2020: The News From February

Continuing our review of the stories we brought you this year, here’s the news from February…

• The Kerry Association in Dublin’s Kerry Person of the Year was announced as Dr Patricia Sheahan on February 1.

Listowel native Dr Sheahan, is Head of Palliative Care at University Hospital Kerry, and has been central to the development of palliative care services in the county. The Laochra Chiarraí award has also been announced as Listowel Tidy Towns.

• The Board of Management at a Tralee Educate Together school criticised the Government for inaction on progressing a new school building.

The school is currently on the School Building list (2019-21) but they said they have not had any direct communication from the Department of Education and Skills regarding any progress or developments in relation to the school.

They say a new school building is an absolute necessity for them to deliver an educational service to their pupils as they face significant and particular difficulties in their current location at Collis Sandes in Killeen.

• Kerry had a brand new millionaire after the National Lottery confirmed that someone who bought their ticket in Milltown had won the Daily Million top prize of €1 million.

• Kerry had its five representatives for the 33rd Dáil with two of them from Tralee after the General Election of February 8.

Norma Foley (FF), Danny Healy Rae (Ind), Brendan Griffin (FG), Michael Healy Rae (Ind) and Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly were elected.

• It was revealed that Quinlans Bar on Bridge Street was sold and it was believed the owners had plans to reopen it again as a public house.

Jim Finucane Auctioneers handled the sale before Christmas 2019 and TraleeToday.ie understood that the new owners have a family connection to the O’Connor family who ran the bar for many years.

• Members of Sinn Féin in the Tralee Electoral Area selected Deirdre Ferris to replace Pa Daly on Kerry County Council following his election the the Dáil.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil’s Johnnie Wall was also co-opted onto the Council to replace Norma Foley TD.

• A local woman was honoured at the Ladies Gaelic Football Association National Volunteer Awards.

Shirley Doody of the Kerins O’Rahillys club was presented with the Club Committee Officer of the Year award at a ceremony in Croke Park, MC’d by Marty Morrissey.

• CBS The Green bridged a 13 year gap to beat rivals St Brendans Killarney to win the Corn Ui Mhuiri in Fitzgerald Stadium.

Supporters from across Kerry and Munster came to Killarney to watch this highly anticipated affair against the Sem and the Tralee side won on a scoreline of 4-15 to 1-15.

• A person who bought their Euromillions ticket in Kerry won €500,000 in late February. The lucky EuroMillions Plus Quick Pick ticket was sold in Sheahan’s Centra Supermarket, Glenbeigh.

• It emerged that Irish Water spent €180,000 on freeing blockages in the sewerage system in Tralee in 2019 and up to four tonnes of ragging (wipes, grease, fats etc) is taken from Tralee water treatment plants every month.
