REVIEW 2022: The News From August…

Taking a look back at the some of the news we brought you in August…

• There was tragedy in Ballybunion when a brother and sister died in a drowning incident on August 4.

Dessie Byrne from Roscommon and his sister Muriel Eriksson who lived in Sweden were pulled from the water on the Men’s Beach in the first drowning accident at the resort in 30 years.

• There was more sadness in south Kerry on August 8 when a man died in a fatal road traffic collision in the townland of Strands End, Caherciveen.

A male motorcyclist and car collided. The male motorcyclist (aged 37 years) was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene.

• A MURDER investigation was underway after the discovery of a body of a woman in her 70s in unexplained circumstances on August 15 in Killarney.

A male in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murder and questioned at Killarney Garda Station in relation to the death of Miriam Burns whose body was discovered at her residence in Ardshanavooley, Killarney, at approximately 1:15pm on Monday. The man was later released without charge.

• THERE were calls for an immediate and speedy investigation into a landslide outside Tralee on August 15.

Kerry County Council met to assess the bogslide which occurred at Maughanknockane, Ballymacelligott where the road had to be closed.

• THE silver medal performance of Kieran Keane in the Shot Put was the crowning glory of what was a brilliant week at the International Children’s Games in Coventry for all Tralee teams.

In a week of excellent performances from the Kerry athletes in basketball, swimming and on the track, the young Lispole man rose to the occasion in style on the opening day of competition to secure second spot behind his German opponent in the Final.

In total 1500 athletes from over 80 cities and 35 countries across the globe participated in this year’s Games, the first since the Covid pandemic.

• THE Rose of Tralee festival returned for the first time since 2019. The Rose Ball, parades, amusements and everything the Festival entailed attracted many thousands to the town.

The new Rose of Tralee was also crowned.  Rachel Duffy, the Westmeath Rose, was announced as the winner on the Kerry Sports Academy stage.

• IT was announced that the new amphitheatre at the Island of Geese site would be the venue for one of town’s events during Culture Night next month.

‘Firestorm’, a new and innovative fire show, would take place at the new outside venue at the newly developed Island of Geese Amphitheatre on Friday, September 23.

• THE Munster Regional finals of the 2022 Irish Restaurant Awards were held and there were Tralee winners. They were Craig Lynch of Ballygarry Estate who won the Best Chef Kerry award while The Oyster Tavern just outside Tralee in the Spa won Best Customer Service Kerry Award.
