Taking a look back at some of the news we brought you in February…

• THERE was a slight rise in new car sales in Kerry in January compared to January 2021, according to the statistics on February 1 from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI),.

There were 560 new car registrations in the county in January  2022 compared to 549 in the same month in 2021, a rise of 2%.

• KILLARNEY native Jessie Buckley enjoyed a good month as she was nominated for both a BAFTA award and an Oscar.

The Kerry woman,  was shortlisted for Best Supporting Actress for ‘The Lost Daughter’ in both awards. The news came as Jessie was wowing audiences in London’s West End in Cabaret.

• THE Rose of Tralee International Festival announced that they have entered into a partnership with The Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee to become a major sponsor of the Festival.

This would entail the Roses staying at the hotel and exclusive use of the hotel’s accommodation, restaurant, meeting rooms, and related services for the duration of the festival would be provided.

Meanwhile, it was revealed talks were advanced on moving the Rose of Tralee selection nights to the Kerry Sports Academy at the Munster Technological University campus in Tralee.

• A first half of Kingdom brilliance made for a happy crowd in Austin Stack Park on February 5 as Kerry cruised to a 1-15 to 0-11 win over great rivals Dublin.

The stand was packed over an hour before throw-in and the covered terrace on the Mitchels side also filled up fairly quickly as fans aimed to avoid the rain.

However, it wasn’t all smiles for some fans. Over 100 fines were issued to motorists for parking illegally during the game.

Gardaí confirmed 93 fines were issued for vehicles parked on footpaths with 13 for breaches interfering with flow of traffic.

• THE CEO of the Aqua Dome said he hoped the public would support the return of the popular facility in March.

It has announced in early February that the Aqua Dome would reopen its doors to customers on Tuesday March 15, almost two years to the day since it was forced to close due to the pandemic.

• IT wasn’t to be for Tralee CBS as they lost the Corn Uí Mhuirí Munster Colleges SFC ‘A’ title to St Brendan’s College Killarney at Fitzgerald Stadium on February 12.

They went down by 0-17 to 0-12 in the sunshine as the Killarney outfit outscored them in the second half, aided by the strong wind and clinical shooting to ensure victory.

• A LOCAL Councillor had to contact the authorities after seeing used needles in a public car park in Tralee.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Mikey Sheehy was dropping off his children to school when he spotted three needles on the ground in the area of Garveys Supervalu Car Park close to the bottle bank.

He contacted the Tralee Municipal District enforcement officer who was on site within 10 minutes of him reporting the issue and cleared the area of the needles and of domestic waste.

• A Status Red Storm warning was issued for Kerry for period of five hours on February 18.

Met Éireann advised that Storm Eunice would track quickly over Ireland bringing severe and damaging winds reaching mean speeds in excess of 80 km/h with gusts in excess of 130 km/h. Some coastal flooding, especially at high tide. Luckily, the storm was not as bad as feared or forecasted in the Tralee area.

While thousands of homes and businesses were left without power and many trees were felled by the force of the storm in parts if the county, there were no serious incidents or injuries.

• BALLYSEEDY Home & Garden announced they were opening several new food businesses in 2022 with the creation of 50 new jobs.

The new roles being created are Chefs (all levels), Food Production Manager, Food Production Assistants, Restaurant Manager, Baristas, Café Assistants, Kitchen Porters, Marketing Assistant and HR Manager in both Kerry and Limerick.

• TRIBUTES were paid to the late Denis Reen, co-founder of the Tralee Chamber Alliance, who passed away on February 19,

“Denis Reen was a collosus in Tralee,” read a statement from the Chamber. “He loved the town and played a key role in its development over many decades. As if he wasn’t busy enough in his daily professional life as a dentist, Denis gave his time and energy, freely, to many community groups.

He was a former President of the Festival of Kerry and Chairman of Na Gaeil GAA Club in the 70s and 80s. A keen golfer, another of his achievements was his involvement in moving Tralee Golf Club from Mounthawk to the world famous Arnold Palmer-designed links in Barrow.

In the 1990s he spearheaded the growth of Tralee as a tourism destination when leading the Tralee Task Force. In 2011, Denis Reen brought the next generation of Tralee’s business people together to lead the recovery after the recession.

It was from that effort that Holiday Tralee, the revived Tralee Taskforce and the former Tralee Town Council joined forces to create a new look Chamber of commerce.

Denis and the Board of the Aqua Dome seconded the CEO, Kieran Ruttledge to lead the growth of Tralee Chamber Alliance in 2012.
