Taking a look back at the news we brought you in July...

• TRALEE received the news in July that they had been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its evening and night-time economy (ENTE)

Similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, the flag aims to raise standards and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5pm and 2.30am.

Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture, while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

• IT was announced that the new skate park in Tralee was to be named after a much-loved local man who passed away earlier this year.

Bruce Kelliher, originally from Ard na Lí in Oakpark, was just 48 when died suddenly on January 31 in Co Galway, where he was living with his family.

The new park located adjacent to Tralee Sports Complex is known as ‘Ox Park’ — Ox being a nickname attributed to Bruce by friends — after the naming was approved by councillors at the Tralee Municipal District meeting in July.

• KERRY County Council appealed to members of the public to take care and to act responsibly during a period of extremely warm weather in mid-July.

Met Éireann issued a High Temperature Advisory with day-time temperatures reaching the high twenties in some locations.

The Council encouraged everyone to be cognisant of the dangers of high temperatures and extremely sunny conditions, to reach out to vulnerable neighbours and relatives, and to be conscious of the impact on pets of extreme heat.

• A NEW online map showcasing over 130 different walking trails in County Kerry was launched by Kerry County Council.

The Kerry Trails Map is an online interactive map for Kerry, which provides essential trail information for those who would like to explore the county’s numerous walks and trails.

• AIB reversed its decision to end cash services at 70 branches around the country, including five in Kerry — Castleisland, Cahersiveen, Dingle, Kenmare and Killorglin.

In a statement, the bank said it had decided not to proceed with the proposed changes, which had caused anger in communities all over the county.

• A preview screening of ‘Joyride’, a movie filmed in Kerry in 2021, was held at Cinema Killarney.

The film, shot in locations around Kerry and starring Oscar-winning actor Olivia Colman, was showcased to a sold-out full house of cast, crew, film enthusiasts, sponsors, and supporters of film in Kerry. Filmed exclusively in Kerry last year, Joyride was released on July 29.

• THERE was very sad news from north Kerry on Sunday, July 24 Gardaí when a fatal road traffic collision took place in the townland of Ballinruddery, on the outskirts of Listowel.

A car collided with a roadside tree and the male driver of the vehicle (aged 19) was pronounced dead at the scene.

• TENS of thousands lined the streets of Tralee on Monday, July 25 to welcome home the All-Ireland champions.

After a epic semi-final win against Dublin in mid July, Kerry and Galway played out another superb game with the Kingdom emerging victorious.

There was an amazing atmosphere in the county capital as Sam was paraded by captain Joe O’Connor of Austin Stacks and the celebrations continued for the rest of the summer.

• Sadly, the Kerry ladies football team could not match the achievements of their male counterparts on July 31. They lost their All-Ireland Final to Meath in Croke Park.
