Taking a look back at some of the news we brought you in May…

• THE Tralee Food Festival returned after three years drawing large crowds to town.

The Taste Trail, music entertainment and food stalls were all a success with fun for all the family to enjoy at the Artisan Food Markets, music in the Square and more.

• A KERRY man has won the ‘Westmeath Bachelor 2022’. The competition saw Causeway’s Bryan Murphy (25), win the title on Sunday.

In front of a packed theatre in Mullingar, 13 finalists showcased their charisma and charm for the celebrity judging panel of Louis Walsh, Anne Doyle, Doireann Garrihy and Nathan Carter but it was Bryan who emerged as the winner.

• A TRALEE-BASED businessman was named among the finalists in the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year Ireland programme.

John T O’Sullivan, the CEO and founder of BioAtlantis was named as one of the 25 finalists. John T. O’Sullivan is a former operations manager of Kerry Ingredients and set up BioAtlantis in 2004.

• ANOTHER Kerry institution returned after Covid and it was worth the wait.

After a break of three years, the Kingdom County Fair returned on Sunday and saw thousands of people descend on the Fair’s new home in Ballymacthomas, just outside Tralee.

Punters braved the traffic queues, but it was worth it when they arrived to enjoy the vast array of entertainment for all the family.

• IT was announced that Smaash Burger would open in Ardfert village with the creation of 20 jobs during the summer.

The business venture from Ballyseedy Home and Garden was set to open in the centre of the village in June and they were looking for people to fill the job vacancies for full-time, part-time and seasonal roles.

• TWO Tralee hotels have made the Tripadvisor Top 25 Hotels in Ireland list.

Ballygarry Estate was ranked 2nd in the list with Manor West Hotel in 24th place. Old Weir Lodge in Killarney topped the list with The Killarney Park in 4th, Cahernane House Hotel 5th, and the Muckross Park Hotel 21st the other Kerry hotels making the Top 25.

• THE Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton was in north Kerry to perform two official tasks — turning the sod on the €61m Listowel Bypass project and the official reopening of the R556 Rathscannell (Dale) road between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff.

The Rathscannell Road was reconstructed and resurfaced by the direct labour of Council crews over the previous year and a half.

• THERE was sad news on May 17 after a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle at Ballyvelly.

The driver of the motorcycle, a man aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision.

• THERE will be restrictions on dogs and horses on parts of Kerry’s Blue Flag beaches during specified time periods this summer after the Kerry County Council Beach Bye Laws 2022 were adopted on May 18.

Councillors voted by 26 to 6 to adopt the Bye Laws. Dogs and horses will not be allowed access to the Blue Flag areas of the beaches from 11am to 7pm from June 1 to September 15, with the restriction operating from 12pm to 6pm at Kells beach.

However dogs will be able to access other areas of these beaches that are not in the Blue Flag zone and these will be clearly marked to direct dog owners to these areas.

• AN Taisce announced that 13 Kerry beaches and two marinas were awarded Blue Flags for the coming year.

The 13 beaches in Kerry to be awarded the Blue Flags are Baile an Sceilg (Ballinskelligs); Ballybunion North Beach; Ballybunion South Beach; Ballyheigue; Banna Strand; Doire Fhíonáin (Derrynane); Fenit; Fionntrá (Ventry); Inch; Kells; Maharabeg; Rossbeigh, White Strand; White Strand, Caherciveen.

• MUNSTER Technological University and the Rose of Tralee International Festival announced that a number of events for the festival would take place at MTU’s Kerry Sports Academy.

The events would include the live televised shows to be broadcast on RTE on the Monday and Tuesday evenings, August 22/23 and the Rose Ball.

• A TRALEE man was elected President of Cork Chamber of Commerce at their AGM. Ronan Murray, a Partner M&A (Strategy and Transactions) at EY Ireland, is originally from St Brendan’s Park but has lived in Cork for several years.

Son of the late Christy and Sheila Murray, Ronan has been a member of Cork Chamber since 2011, and has served as Vice President for the past two years.

• KERRY defeated Limerick by 1-28 to 0-8 in the Munster Senior Football Championship Final on Saturday May 28th at Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney to progress to the quarter-finals.
