Taking a look back at some of the news we brought you in October…

• AN announcement of €8,696,719 in funding for Kerry ETB to invest in further education centres in Tralee and Listowel was made on October 3.

Over €3,700,000 will see a new apprenticeship training building established at the site of the Kerry College Monavalley Campus.

The new project will facilitate the expansion of carpentry, joinery, electrical and pre-apprenticeship courses as well as providing additional car parking spaces on site.

• BALLYGARRY Estate Hotel & Spa were awarded ‘Large Golf Hotel of the Year’ at the 2022 Ireland Golf Tour Operator Association (IGTOA) awards.

Padraig McGillicuddy, proprietor of Ballygarry Estate said; “To win an award such as the IGTOA Large Golf Hotel of the Year is truly an honour and something that we are very humbled by.

“It is a superb reflection of the hard work, dedication and the standards that we strive so hard to uphold here in Ballygarry,” he added.

• THREE Kerry companies have been awarded Ireland’s Best Managed Companies accolade at the 14th annual awards programme, led by Deloitte in association with Bank of Ireland.

Fexco achieved platinum standard having won for the seventh consecutive year, while the Garvey Group and the Ard Rí Group in Tralee were both requalifying winners.

• IT was announced that two Tralee swimmers would be inducted into the Ireland Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Class of 2022 in November.

Elaine Burrows Dillane would receive the honour for her achievements in marathon swimming and giving back to the sport, while Kevin Williams would be rewarded for his long term dedication to and promotion of the sport and success in coaching swimmers to their target marathon swims.

• A MAN died in a violent assault which occurred at Rathass Cemetery on October 5.

Thomas Dooley from Killarney was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife was taken to UHK with injuries. A number of people have been arrested in relation to the incident and some have already been charged.

• MEMBERS of the Kerry diaspora who are to the fore in promoting Kerry from a visitor and economic viewpoint, were honoured in Tralee on October 7 at an event which was part of the ‘An Turas Mór– the Homecoming Kerry Festival’.

The special event, which took place in the Rose Hotel, Tralee, saw 23 members of the Kerry diaspora, based in London, Manchester and Massachusetts, honoured for their work.

• AN Garda Síochána confirmed new appointments and the allocation of a new Chief Superintendent for the Kerry Garda Division.

Following the departure of Eileen Foster, the new Kerry Garda Chief Superintendent would be Padraic Powell who was promoted to the role having previously served as a Superintendent in Bray and Fermoy districts. He took up the job from October 17.

• THE reigning county champions, Austin Stacks, lost their senior club status in October.

The Tralee titans were defeated by Kenmare Shamrocks in the Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship Relegation Play-off game at Fitzgerald Stadium by 3-11 to 1-15.

Meanwhile, Kerins O’Rahillys secured the Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Championship for the first time since 2010 and went forward to represent Kerry in the Munster Championship. They beat Templenoe by 0-15 to 0-14 in the decider.

• THE Tralee-Fenit Greenway was officially opened on October 28 by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD.

It was the second Greenway she opened on the day after she opened the 16km Listowel to Abbeyfeale Greenway earlier that morning.

Those present at the opening at the Bracker O’Regan Road entrance to the Greenway included public representatives, landowners, the Council team who worked on the project, members of Spa-Fenit Community Council and others. Rev Jim Stephens and Fr Padraig Walsh also gave a blessing to the Greenway.

• TRALEE won its 10th Tidy Towns Gold Medal in a row and in doing so upped their points tally on last year. They were awarded 347 points, up nine on 2021’s total of 338 with an increase in almost every category.
