THE Ring of Kerry Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car run is back as an open public event after two years of scaled back efforts as a result of the pandemic.

Organisers, the Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club have attracted a 70-car entry for the 43rd running of the popular event.

It will take place this coming Saturday and Sunday, May 20 to 21 with an official start from the Ballygarry Hotel and Estate just outside Tralee at 10 am on Saturday morning.

This year’s run will feature an overnight halt in Waterville, the first stopover since the 40th anniversary run in 2019.

The drivers are tackling the Ring of Kerry the ‘opposite away round’ by passing through Killarney, Moll’s Gap, Kenmare and Sneem on their way to the overnight stop.

The oldest car in the run is a 1922 Peugeot owned by Camp-based Michael Crean. Michael Coffey from Kells Bay will run a 1929 Chrysler in the event.

A 1922 Peugeot driven by Camp-based Michael Crean will be the oldest car in this weekend’s Ring of Kerry Run.

Club chairman Tony Hehir will run his 1977 Triumph Dolomite and secretary Garret Foley will steer his 1973 Triumph Stag.

KVVCCC are keen to build on the success of the 2019 run – the last proper event – which attracted over 100 cars but has opted for a softer low-key approach to this year’s run as the world, slowly but surely gets back to normal.

“For the last two years members, when restrictions allowed, just went for a drive out on the day to mark the occasion,” explained secretary Garret Foley.

“This year we are mindful that the pandemic has not gone away and respect that hotels in the area have a backlog of weddings to get through.  We have put together a slightly scaled back Ring of Kerry but are already looking forward to next year when we should be back to normal.”

Meanwhile, the club hosted a busy pre-Ring of Kerry Cars and Coffee event in Tralee on Sunday. Over 50 cars attended the event at the Corrib Oil station on John Joe Sheehy Road.

Bill and Jane Smith won the overall “Best Car On Show” award as picked by Kevin McCarthy of sponsor Garvey’s Supermarket Group. Kevin was impressed by the Kilgarvan couple’s 1936 Riley Kestrel Tourer.

The Chairman’s Choice award, chosen by Tony Hehir went to the club’s Youth Officer Alan Fitzell who displayed a 1956 Ford Anglia 100E at the show.
