The statistics were given by Garda Chief Superintendent Tom Myers at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee on Friday. There were 297 drink-driving offences, up 10% from 2016 (269). Driving under the influence of drug offences also rose, from 12 to 15.

Male drivers between the ages of 16 and 40 accounted for 134 of the drink-driving offences. Women made up just 36 of the total.
