I SUPPOSE a good place to begin with anything is at the start and a good place to start here is in the dictionary.
Charity is described as ‘Charitable giving is the act of giving money, goods or time to the unfortunate, either directly or by means of a charitable trust or other worthy cause’.
Ok, but I’d like to come at this subject perhaps from another angle.
I’ve written on many occasions how basically we are all the same – i.e. balls of energy (or balls of spirit if you prefer that terminology).
When we connect with this energy by listening to our bodies from within and treat it with all the dignity and love that our self-respect demands, we become to appreciate the true Power that exists within every one of us.
We are all equal in this energy (spirit!) realm and we are all truly creative, resourceful and whole.
Of course we are because we are created in the image and likeness of God.
Some people are more comfortable with the expression Higher Power or otherwise and that’s ok too, as it is only terminology and it is important not to get too caught up in this. Remember, faith is believing without understanding!
What is important is that we realise our connection with our divine power.
When we come to this realisation and as I said above, we are all equal, we also come to the realisation that every other human being is also part of this divine connection.
We recognise the beauty in ourselves and the beauty of others and ultimately we then realise that we are all connected energetically (spiritually) with the divine.
This from a spiritual point of view is called Divine Oneness – In other words we are all one.
Our ancient ancestors were very much aware of this.
Arising from this awareness (that we are all one) then surely when we love another human being we are also loving ourselves and it is a sine qua non (therefore taken) that if we are unkind to another human being we are being unkind to ourselves.
This not only applies to other human beings but also how we respect our planet and all living organisms that occupy it.
So, true charity is recognising the beauty that lies within everyone and everything and doing our utmost to respect that bond.
A very interesting fact is the origin of the word charity. It comes from the Latin word Caritas.
In Christian theology charity, Latin caritas, is by Thomas Aquinas understood as ‘the friendship’. The love that is caritas is distinguished by its origin, being divinely infused into the soul.
So we now see the connection between Caritas, Love and Friendship. Very interesting! I wonder is that where the Irish word ‘Cara’ (Friend) originated from?!
