Roger Harty: Control = Peace

I SUPPOSE the best place to start here is with an example.

One of the best areas to take an example from is a situation where our life is at risk as it makes its point pretty quickly and also at a deeper level.

Why? I hear you ask. Because there is nothing to focus the mind as much as a situation where our lives are in danger.

So on that note I am going to take the example of driving a car. If you were driving a car and you turned the steering wheel to the right on 10 occasions and the car turned right,  but on the eleventh occasion that you turned the car right  it began to veer left – would you have much confidence in driving that car?

The answer is obvious — No!

So the conclusion we can derive from this is also obvious; Lack of control, causes lack of confidence which in turn results in anxiety.

If this is true then what is interesting here is that the opposite is also true.

Control causes, confidence which in turn renders peace.

So… Control = Peace

The type of control that I am talking about here is the type of control that we can render over ourselves and obviously has nothing to do with controlling others which has many negative connotations.

We cannot control what happens in our lives but we can always control how we react.

This is a very broad sweeping statement, but on closer scrutiny you will find it in general to be true. Ultimately with practice we can control how we react to any given situation.

This is the best piece of news I can give you, because if can we always control how we react then that ultimately suggests that we are in charge of our own inner peace or lack of it for that matter.

It is a great feeling to know that human beings with practice can control their emotions which in turn gives us the possibility of controlling our own inner peace which ultimately is what all human beings are searching for. We are in charge! How good is that?

Furthermore Jesus gives us the perfect advice as to how to achieve this goal when He tells us;

I Am (is) The Way

Learning to Be Present is The Way.

P.S.

As I write this article I am also very much aware that there are many human beings who have great difficulty in controlling their emotions for one reason or another and my thoughts and prayers are with them.

Next week I am going to write about — The Meaning of life.
