A GROUP of pupils from Moyderwell Mercy primary school received some expert tuition on Wednesday as they prepare to visit Dublin in January for a prestigious science event next month.

Some pupils from sixth class at the school are taking their project on optical illusions to the BT Young Scientist And Technology Exhibition at the RDS in January and local optician Roger Harty was happy to share his knowledge with them.

“The first part of the project is about how the eye actually works and this is where Roger comes in,” said teacher Eoin Sayers.

“The second part is we are going to test every child in the school and the teachers with optical illusions to see if age affects perception,” he said.

This is the 12th year in a row that pupils from the school will be represented at the exhibition and they are all looking forward to travelling and staying overnight in Dublin in January.

Roger Harty explained the inner workings of the eye and showed them examples of optical illusions. Roger said he was delighted to help out and hoped he fostered an interest in all things ocular.
