Rose Festival Expresses Sadness At Death Of Former Selection Host

THE Managing Director of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, has sent his sympathies on behalf of the festival, to the family of the late Michael Twomey, a former selection host, who died yesterday.

Mr Twomey, the veteran Cork actor who was best known as Miah to actor Frank Duggan’s Cha in the 1970s RTÉ satirical series ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’, was the host of the Rose of Tralee Selection of 1972.

“We were sad to learn of the passing of Michael Twomey this week,” said Mr O’Gara. “He hosted the Rose of Tralee Selection in 1972 when Claire Dubendorfer brought the crown to Switzerland for its one and only time. Michael returned to Tralee as our guest in 2009 when we celebrated 50 years of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. We send our deepest sympathy to his family.”

Mr Michael Twomey died at the age of 84 following a short illness.  In 2013, he was awarded the Freedom of Cork City for “his unwavering lifetime contribution to professional and amateur theatre, arts, drama and song in Cork City”.
