A SCULPTURE made entirely out of tyres is currently on display at Kerry County Council Buildings in Rathass.

Sculptor Mick Davis, who was a recipient of a Kerry County Council Artist Bursary this year, is responsible for the piece of art which is modelled on Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’.

It will be on display at the building in Tralee for a number of weeks and members of the public are welcome to come and view the work.

In 2014 Mick, who lives and works near Dingle, began working with old tyres – as an enthusiastic cyclist he was aware of the issue of disposing of old bicycle tyres. Through his work he addresses the important environmental issue of recycling, by turning waste products into objects of art.

This is a highly unusual and unique art form that Mick has made his own and is quickly gaining in popularity. Mick uses a range of tyres and finds that although the material is flexible, it is also highly durable. It is Mick’s hope is that through his sculpture he can showcase an alternative way of thinking when it comes to recycling tyres.

He has had three solo exhibitions of his Recycled Tyre Sculpture in  2014 —2015 and exhibited at the Society of Portrait Sculptors Exhibition in Pall Mall, London (May 18th- 23rd, 2015). It’s certainly worth a visit to Rathass for a look!
