KERRY County Council is to replace a number of Poplar trees on Dan Spring Road in Tralee in the coming weeks.

As reported earlier this week from the meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors, the trees along the perimeter of the Tralee Harriers Athletic Club grounds sustained storm damage in 2020 and have been identified as requiring replacement by independent arborists.

Tralee Municipal District councillors were advised on Monday that two expert reports had found that the mature trees were showing decline and exhibiting storm damage and the trees had come to their ‘end of life’.

Roots of a number of the trees have also extended beneath the footpath on Dan Spring Road and are constituting a trip hazard. Both independent reports recommended immediate tree replacement to address these matters.

Given the risk to public safety and in the interests of maintain the infrastructure along Dan Spring Road, and in keeping with the council’s Tralee Tree Management Strategy 2020-2025, the trees are to be replaced with alternatives including Hornbeam and Turkish Hazel.

The works are being carried out having regard to the provisions of the Wildlife Acts and following consultation with the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
