SHANAKILL Family Resource Centre has called for more resources after research revealed the advantages and disadvantages of living in five estates in the area.

Noise, anti-social behaviour and litter were among the biggest problems in the estate but community spirit and great neighbours were mentioned frequently as positives.

Bernadette O’Carroll, Project Co-ordinator at Shanakill Family Resource Centre, made a presentation at Tuesday’s meeting of the Tralee Municipal District.

She gave the results of research carried out  by the centre in conjunction with NEWKD, IT Tralee and the University of Limerick.

Residents in five estates were surveyed, door to door, on the problems facing the area and the positives of living there.

The estates were Shanakill (220 homes), Gallowsfield (117), Rahoonane (90), Cois Coille (49) and Muing (36).

The research found anti-social behaviour, traffic, noise, dogs off leashes, lack of amenities and litter were problems across all the estates.

The solutions suggested by residents were the use of CCTV to catch illegal dumpers, a dog warden on estates, more speed ramps and the raising of existing ramps, drug dealing and anti-social behaviour to be tackled and Tralee gardaí to be more involved and proactive in estates.

Shanakill FRC also called for funding to help local residents committees and the development of green areas.

There was much positive feedback too with the most common comments given by those surveyed being:

“Great neighbours”

“I grew up here and I came back with my children”

“Community spirit”

“My children are safe here with good friends”

“I would not want to live any where else”

Ms O’Carroll asked that the Council provide support, resources and inclusion for funding in the yearly estimates.

She said the problems in the estates deal with issues every day and the quality of life needs to be addressed.
