SIAMSA Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland has announced its audition schedule for the National Folk Theatre Training Academy.

Every year, Siamsa Tíre searches for the most talented traditional singers and dancers living in Kerry, starting from the ages of 7-12 years.

This year’s auditions will take place by appointment only on Thursday 13th June from 6-8pm at Teach Siamsa Finuge, Friday 14th June from 6-8pm at Teach Siamsa na Carraige, Dingle and on Saturday 15th June from 10am – 2pm at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee.

Applicants must have a song and an Irish dance piece prepared for their audition and need to demonstrate some previous interest in Irish music and/or dance, as this training is not for complete beginners.

Successful junior candidates take part in a three-year formal educational training programme with classes taking place weekly from October to May.

The new training classes for teens and adults will run throughout the summer (updated schedule to be announced in June on ).

Candidates are trained in Irish dancing, traditional singing and drama in the unique Siamsa Tíre style with a view to becoming a member of the community cast and performing with the NFT in the annual Festival of Folk summer seasons.

“Kerry has such a wonderful pool of talented traditional Irish performers of all ages,” said Anne O’Donnell, Training & Development Officer, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland.

“In recognition of this, we decided to extend our auditions to traditional artists of all ages that may not have had the opportunity to audition with us previously. Successful Irish dancers, singers and musicians will train with Ireland’s only traditional theatre company to learn our unique style and help us preserve and share these arts with audiences worldwide, while developing and showcasing their talents on the Siamsa stage. For some, this leads to being eventually cast in the National Folk Theatre after more training and for others they gain very solid performance foundations that they go onto use in their future training and performing careers.”
