SINN Fein will table a motion at the next full meeting of Kerry County Council which will call on councillors to commit to reducing the Property Tax.

A media report revealed this week that the Government is considering new cuts to 11 local authorities, including Kerry County Council, in order to stop them from passing on a reduction in the tax.

Part of Sinn Fein’s promise during the local elections campaign was their commitment to try to get a 15% cut in the tax as soon as possible.

Sinn Féin has said that any attempt by the government to prevent local authorities from lowering the Property Tax would be another attack on local democracy and an outrageous breach of their commitments.

Cllr. Toiréasa Ferris says that the reported government move is an outrageous breach of their commitment on the Property Tax and local government input.

Sinn Féin has submitted a motion for the July meeting of Kerry County Council calling on councillors to commit to reducing the Property Tax in Kerry by the maximum 15% allowed.

“This would represent the first giveback to families and individuals since the economic crisis began. We will not be deterred from trying to achieve this,” said Cllr. Ferris.

“We have become used to this government moving the goalposts in relation to the so called Property Tax since its inception but this would be an outrageous breach of their commitment to allow local authorities such as Kerry County Council the power to lower the charge,” said Cllr. Toiréasa Ferris in a statement this evening.

“If media reports are correct then they are now attempting to prevent this from happening by inflicting further cuts on local authorities. If they do this it would represent another attack on local democracy by a discredited and deceitful government,” said Cllr Ferris.
