SIPTU members employed at the car parts manufacturer, BorgWarner in Tralee, voted yesterday to accept improved redundancy terms.

SIPTU members had been in dispute with the company over the redundancy terms since the summer when it was announced the plant in Monavalley would close in March 2021.

SIPTU Organiser, Joe Kelly, said: “Our members have voted to accept improved redundancy terms which were presented to them by management on 7th October.

“The terms include a payment of five weeks pay, inclusive of statutory redundancy, for each year of service or four weeks’ pay plus statutory redundancy for each year of service. The company will apply whichever of these two payments is most financially beneficial to each employee. These payments will also apply to staff with less than two years’ service.

“In addition, the company will pay a bonus of €1,000 per employee in respect of an orderly wind-down of the plant,” he said.

Talks between SIPTU representatives and management have continued since July when it was announced that the plant was to be closed with a loss of employment for 118 SIPTU members.

“The satisfactory outcome of this negotiation process is to the great credit of our members and especially the SIPTU workplace committee. Negotiations were difficult but the patience and perseverance of our negotiating team ensured their success,” said Joe Kelly.

SIPTU Shop Steward, Helen Hanafin, said: “Previous offers were beneficial to different grades of workers but elements of each were also unattractive. These problems were overcome during the negotiation process.”
