SO then, the big day is almost here, the presents are bought (we hope!) and all that’s left to do is make time for friends and family. However, if you do feel like heading outdoors, here’s a few suggestions…

1. Get to town early on Christmas Eve…

You probably have all the presents bought, but if you’re not too busy peeling sprouts it’s always nice to head into town anyway for the very special atmosphere on Christmas Eve. Meet with friends and family, have a quick drink (or two) and go home early.

2. Go for a swim…

Whether it’s Banna, Fenit or Ballyheigue there’s Christmas Day swims only  a short drive from town.

The Fenit one, in aid of the RNLI, starts at 12 noon and is the biggest in the county with upwards of 800 people regularly taking part. Ballyheigue swim also starts at 12 noon.

For slightly later risers, the Banna swim, in aid of Banna Rescue takes place at 12.30pm, so if you want to blow off the cobwebs from the few sherrys on Christmas Eve, take a dip.

3. Walk off the turkey…

Join Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor and friends for the annual Bill Kirby Memorial Walk on St Stephen’s Day. It starts at the Brogue Inn at 11.30am but the fun and entertainment beings at 11am.

4. Family fun at the rugby club…

Tralee Rugby Club is hosting its annual St Stephen’s Day 3k & 5k Fun Run.

Registration for the run takes place at 12.30pm with the run beginning at 1.15pm. It costs €5 for children/students, €10 for adults and €20 max for a family.

The Fun Run precedes the annual Tralee RFC v Exiles rugby match which kicks off at 2pm and promises as ever to be an entertaining afternoon with some “golden oldies” hinting at making an appearance this year. You can also watch Munster v Leinster in the bar at 3.15pm.

5. A vintage fun run…

If you’re out Abbeydorney way on St Stephen’s Day, then you might want to check out the Abbeydorney Vintage Club’s Christmas Fun Run featuring cars, tractors and motorbikes. Registration is at 12 noon in the village.

6. Relive ‘Janus’…

A 20th anniversary celebration of the (in)famous Janus dance events 20 years ago in Tralee takes place in The Abbey Inn on St Stephen’s Night.

It’s a stellar line-up with Mark Kavanagh, DJ Eibhlín, Billy Nasty, Jonno Brien, Marq Walsh, DJ Stacky, John O’Loughlin and Jason Fitz playing tunes for the masses.

It kicks off pretty early in the evening at 7.30pm and continue until the wee hours. Tickets €10.
