Mary O’Donnell on the medical-grade sunscreens available at the Cosmetic and Hair Restoration Clinic at the Bon Secours in Tralee to protect your skin as the sun arrives this spring…

WE have had a great week of sunshine and we are starting to feel the warmth coming through!

While sunshine will give us some much needed vitamin D, we all know that time spent in the sun makes our skin age faster than normal, evidenced by wrinkles and pigmentation.

To protect your skin, I recommend applying sunscreen to your face every day, all year long, 365 days a year.

At CHRC here at Bon Secours, we stock medical-grade sunscreens that are paraben and sulfate free.

My favourite is award-winning Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF 40, a sheer physical sunscreen that provides powerful broad-spectrum protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

It uses a combination of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and moisturising vitamin E and is packed with free-radical-quenching antioxidants, including a stable vitamin C, resveratrol, grape seed extract and glutathione.

It is available with or without a tint. The versatile tint blends beautifully on the skin creating a sheer healthy glow.

In preparation for summer, and in anticipation of getting into the summer wardrobe, we have more and more people coming into the clinic to treat pigmentation on their arms, hands, faces and décolleté, to return freckled, sun damaged skin to brighter, clearer skin.

Our Versa Intense Pulse Light photo-facial uses a broad spectrum of light to target pigmentation. This non invasive treatment will improve sun damage, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation with minimal downtime and discomfort.

Our IPL photo facial works to address brown and red discoloration because its spectrum of light causes minimal injury to the thickness of the epidermis but targets pigmentation and broken capillaries at its base.

These pigment and vascular structures absorb particular wavelengths of light, which allows damage only to the unwanted discoloration leaving the rest of the skin intact. The process allows minimal side effects and minimal downtime and leaves you with brighter, clearer-looking skin.
