Tralee Pitch & Putt Club is in fine fettle and looking forward to welcoming members back next week.

TRALEE Pitch & Putt will be one of the first sports clubs in Tralee town to open back up for play on Monday, May 18 if the easing of restrictions comes to pass.

With all golf courses being more than 5km from town and most other sports clubs and organisations closed, it provides the people of the town with an opportunity to get outside, get away from TV and social media, and get their sports fix in a safe location.

While green fees (where people turn up and can pay to play for the day) are not allowed, the club is welcoming new members to join up.

While green fees may be allowed by the government later in the summer, the club is eager to embrace the ‘Members Only’ restrictions while they are in place.

They point out that it’s much easier to ensure all rules and protocols are followed by a common group of members than a diverse range of the general population.

The club also says that pitch and putt is one of the more accessible sports around for new players.

Players only need 2 golf clubs (a wedge and putter), some golf balls (which the club can supply if needed), and an hour or two to spare. Pitch and putt also has a much more relaxed atmosphere as a sport when compared to golf and it’s much more beginner-friendly.

A membership allows a person to play as much as they want between the 18th of May and the 1st of March 2021. The membership fees are:

• €90 for Adults
• €80 for Students/Over 65s
• €100 for Parent and Child (€40 per additional child)
• €180 for Family (2 parents and 2 kids)
• Under 16s must play with a parent at all times.

While the wide open space and the fact that pitch and putt is a non-contact sport allows the club to operate in a safe manner, there will still be some protocols in place.

These protocols focus on limiting the number of people in a group, preventing people from touching common contact points on the course, providing hand sanitizer for use, and ensuring social distancing is being observed at all times. Opening in a safe manner and protecting the members is of paramount importance to the club.

These same members have been carrying out essential work over the last 7 weeks to ensure that the course is in pristine condition when it reopens.

Many of the club’s longtime members haven’t played since the middle of March, with others not having played yet this year. In a normal year, the competitive season in the sport is kicking off around this time.

With casual play on the horizon for the immediate future, the club hopes that people from town will take advantage of its facilities to destress and get away from the house for a few hours.

Those interested in joining up can message the club on its Facebook page or via the website, traleepitchandputt.com. People can also email the club at traleepitchandputtclub@gmail.com or call 087 363 7581.
