Arthur J Spring is calling for free parking hours to be extended.

LABOUR TD Arthur J Spring has called for an increase in free parking hours in Tralee after the recent weather conditions put shoppers off coming to town.

Businesses are reporting a drop in footfall over the past couple of weeks due to heavy rainfall, high winds and weather alerts issued by Met Eireann.

The Kerry North/West Limerick TD believes there is a need to increase the hours of free parking in Tralee in response to this.

“Tralee has its own individual free parking policy for the Christmas period,” said Deputy Spring. “I strongly welcome this traditional pre-Christmas free parking period as it incentivizes people to shop in the town. However the recent bad weather which has been at its worst at the weekends and the continuous weather warnings have served as deterrents to shoppers.”

“Local traders in the Tralee have informed me that footfall is down. I am asking that Kerry County Council considers increasing the hours of free parking in Tralee for the rest of the free parking period as an act of goodwill to the shoppers and traders and in response to the large rain fall on the weekends,” he said.

At the moment there is free parking every day after 1pm in all local authority car parks, but Deputy Spring is calling for it to be extended.

“The rain fall on the previous Saturdays has prevented people from doing their Christmas shopping and is the major contributor to the reduction in footfall. The attraction of the additional free parking hours will add to the shopping experience and make Tralee a more attractive destination for Christmas shopping and the New Year sales,” he said.
