The St Brendan’s team who beat Portlaoise Panthers in Portlaoise on Friday night.

St. Brendan’s travelled to Portlaoise for Round 2 of the Men’s Intermediate National Cup. The visitors found it tough to find baskets early but lock down defence from Wayne Guthrie, Jason Quirke and Kieran Donaghy meant that the home side was never allowed to build a lead. Fergal O Sullivan found his scoring touch early and helped himself to12 first quarter points.

The introduction of Paul McMahon added to the St Brendan’s arsenal and they lead 23-14 after the just 10 minutes. St Brendan’s, playing with a full strength squad, added fresh legs at the beginning of the second quarter and saw Mike O Donnell, Conor Donaghy and Stephen Hanifin impress. St Brendan’s led 39-25 at the half time break.

The original starting five began the second half as St Brendan’s looked to put the game beyond the home side with a surge of three pointers late in the quarter led by captain Darren O’Sullivan. St. Brendan’s led by 16 at the end of the 3rd quarter and with all squad members contributing to the scoresheet they never allowed Portlaoise any hope of a comeback.

The final quarter was no contest with Brendan’s dominant on both sides of the floor running out comfortable winners with a final score line of 86-51. Club sponsors The Castle Bar and Paddy Powers are delighted to be involved with a team capable of challenging for national honours.

Next up for St Brendan’s is away to Phoenix BC of Belfast with a date for the game yet to be fixed. St Brendan’s will hope to continue their fine play as the sole Kerry representatives in the quarter finals.

Tralee Imperials 61

Tralee Imperials claimed victory in a very well contested local derby with St. Brendan’s played at Presentation Gym last Sunday. Imperials got off to a much better start and led by eleven 19-8 at the end of the first quarter.

It was a lead they would maintain throughout the game and it was testament to St. Brendan’s that they went score for score with their local rivals from there on. The second quarter saw Brendan’s find their range but Imperials still managed to edge the quarter by 2 points and held a 13 point advantage at the half time break as the host defence struggled with the attacking threat of Dara Devine and Ryan Leonard.

However Brendan’s shooting improved considerably in the second half and with Dominic Craig, Ama Lelental and Kasparas Bulrytlas landing some fine scores the home side went basket for basket in the third and fourth quarters. Imperials managed to keep their lead in double figures and saw out their win in style by thirteen in the end on a scoreline of 61-48.
