Brendan’s travelled to Killarney for the return leg of the contest, the first of which was played out in October. In that encounter Cougars held Brendan’s to scoring a mere 12 points. Jack Clapham distributed the ball well with guards Matthew O’Mahony and Graham Sheehy moving and passing well also. Post players Ryan McHugh and Sam McCarthy got Brendan’s first baskets scoring 6 points to Cougars 5 in the first quarter. In quarter 2, Garry Lynch drove through the Cougars defence to score 3 baskets while Nelly Olanrewaju’s speed and hard work under the boards set him up for 2 baskets.

Daniel Bowler and Sean Dillane were working hard in defence making it difficult for Cougars who were held to 6 points in reply. Brendan’s led 16 -11 at half-time. The second half was all Brendans with immense defensive effort from Denis Malihin, Liam Kingston, Ryan McHugh and Sam McCarthy.

Jack Clapham carried the ball co nfidently and scored the first basket of the half. Liam Kingston who had been unlucky to miss his first effort scored with his second and then scored another nice basket with Graham Sheehy winning and then scoring a free throw. Cougars were held to a single point in this quarter. Quarter 4 saw scores from Garry Lynch and free throw points from Sean Dillane and Nelly Olanrewaju with Cougars scoring a single basket in reply. Brendan’s prevailed on a final score of 28 – 14 displaying considerable progress made in the season to date.

St. Brendan’s 42 TK Vixens 31
St. Brendan’s got off to the better start with Jack Clapham and Graham Sheehy combining well to score 11 points while Sam McCarthy and Ryan McHugh’s defence held Vixens in check.

Sean Dillane hustled well not giving Vixens room to shoot but the visitors fought back well though and had narrowed the gap to 2 points by the end of the quarter. Quarter 2 was all Brendans with Liam Kingston opening the scoring with the first basket.

Sam McCarthy’s work under the boards earned him a good score and ball-carrier Garry Lynch cut through the Vixens defence to score 6 points. Vixens struggled to penetrate the Brendan’s defensive pairing of Matthew Hussey and Sam McCarthy only scoring 2 baskets in the quarter.

Matthew Hussey was unlucky not to score from rebounds but when Liam Kingston drove forward and was fouled and he smoothly put away the two free shots bringing the score to 25 – 13 for Brendan’s at half time.  However Vixens weren’t be so easily dismissed. They dominated the third quarter particularly through their big man Aidan Curry who scored 7 of their 13 points.

Sean Dillane went on a daring run through the packed Vixens defence finishing with a beautifully judged basket. In the next attack he dished out to Ryan McHugh who skilfully popped the shot. Daniel Bowler was fouled and scored one from the line. Graham Sheehy made a lovely steal and went on a run dishing the ball to Daniel again under the basket.

Daniel scored despite being fouled and then sunk the free throw to complete the three point score. Declan Mangan was unlucky not to score having got himself into good shooting positions. Vixens narrowed the gap further at the start of quarter 4 with a well-chosen shot.

Good delivery of the ball by Garry Lynch meant Graham Sheehy, Sam McCarthy and Daniel Bowler all got their names on the score sheet for Brendan’s. At the same time Sam McCarthy held the Vixens big man to a single basket in the quarter. Vixens Eoin O’Shea scored a lovely 3 pointer towards the finish but it wasn’t to be enough. Brendan’s held on to finish with a well-deserved win 42 to 31.

U10 Girls Blitz

Congratulations and well done to the Girls U10s and their coach Deirdre Hartnett who travelled to Kenmare last Sunday for the Blitz held at Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine. The girls competed in two games and performed very well against very good teams from Kenmare and Gneeveguilla. It was a great experience for the girls and will stand to them in future events.
