St Brendans BasketballLast weekend St. Brendan’s hosted The Jimmy Curran Memorial tournament for U14 boys in Moyderwell and Presentation Gym in Tralee. The club was delighted to welcome teams from all over the county along with teams from Sligo, Dublin and Cork. The club U14s continued their highly successful year with a victory over Sligo
All-Stars in the overall final while our 2nd team competed well but just fell short to Blue Demons in the Plate Final.

St. Brendan’s 1 opened their account with a one point win over St. Bridget’s on Friday night before accounting for KUBS from Dublin and Blue Demons from Cork in their other group matches on Saturday. The draw saw them face St. Bridget’s for the second time in the semi-final and again Brendan’s proved too good for their local rivals winning through to the final on a scoreline of 36-28.

In the final Sligo All Stars provided the opposition but in a one sided affair Brendan’s outclassed the visitors to take the honours with a 28-8 win. Captain Enda O’Connor scooped tournament MVP award after his fine display in the final. St. Brendan’s also had James Fernane and Rap Buivydas along with Enda named in the All-Star team.

St. Brendan’s 2 performed well and were unlucky not to take the Plate prize but lost out by 30-18 to Blue Demons from Cork in the decider. Well done to all the coaches, players and tournament organisers for putting together another very well run event in honour of former St. Brendan’s Basketball Club.

St. Brendan’s 34 St Joseph’s 28

St. Joseph’s, who finished runners up in the league, must have felt confident as they entered Moyderwell having defeated Brendans 52 – 28 in their home leg of the contest in November. However they met a Brendan’s team transformed from the meeting before Christmas. Both teams took a while to settle with each side scoring
just 4 points in the first quarter.

The respective defences were proving their strength while the offences were taking time to settle in a decent scoring pattern. Joseph’s asserted their expected dominance in quarter 2 scoring 8 points to Brendan’s 7. The home side were a little too reliant on ball carrier Garry Lynch who contributed 6 of those 7 points.

In quarter 3 it was Brendan’s that really found their range in offence and forged ahead. Baskets from Garry Lynch, Graham Sheehy, Liam Kingston and the in-form Ryan McHugh managed 8 baskets in all while Joseph’s tally was confined to three scores from their big man Shane O’Connell. O’Connell was however being well contained by Brendan’s Sam McCarthy and as they headed into the final quarter Brendan’s led 26 to 22.

Brendan’s Daniel Bowler scored the first basket of the quarter and the ever-reliable Garry Lynch followed this with a perfectly executed lay-up at the end of a powerful drive down the middle. Joseph’s replied with a basket and then
scored a free throw. Brendans still led by 4 with 3 minutes to go.

Ryan McHugh sank a lovely shot from the just outside the key. However Joseph’s Gearoid Stack replied with a three pointer of his own. The last score of the night was a sweet shot by Liam Kingston which brought Brendan’s tally to 34. Josephs, finishing on 28 and were left wondering what might have been as Brendan’s avenged the loss in November in fine style.

Final score was St. Brendan’s 34 St. Joseph’s 28.

Players & scorers: Garry Lynch 12; Graham Sheehy 8; Ryan McHugh 6; Liam Kingston 5; Daniel Bowler 3; Matthew Hussey; Nelly Olanrewaju; Jack Clapham; Declan Mangan; Sam McCarthy
