St Brendan's Basketball ClubMen’s Senior County League Div 1

St. Mary’s 62

St. Brendan’s 59

Last Sunday our Senior Men’s team played there first Div 1 County League game of the year when they played St. Mary’s of Castleisland.

This game always carries a bit of an edge, as there is a great rivalry between the sides.

St. Mary’s started the game stronger as St. Brendan’s found it tough to find baskets, but from great defensive work from Darren O Sullivan and Conor Donaghy ensured the game was still close by the end of the quarter.

Much of the same was seen in the 2nd quarter although some great shooting from Fergal O Sullivan and baskets from Rob Mulcahy, Cyril Wallace and Stephen Hanifin brought St. Brendan’s back into the game by the half time buzzer.

At the start of the 2nd half St Mary’s upped the pace of the game in a big way and created a 11 point lead early on that was always that little bit too much to get back from for St. Brendan’s by the end of the 3rd Quarter.

More good play however from Fergal O Sullivan and massive work rate defensively from Jason Quirke and Darren O’Sullivan who also chipped in with baskets brought the game right back to the sides level with 3 mins to play.

Youth prevailed in the final minutes as St. Brendan’s just ran out of steam at the end and were eventually edged out on a scoreline of 62-59.

This was not a bad start for our Senior Men playing one of the stronger teams in the county in the first game of the year.

Top Scorers:- Fergal O Sullivan 24, Darren O Sullivan 13, Stephen Hanifin 6, Cyril Wallace 4, Jason Quirke 4, Rob Mulcahy 4, Conor Donaghy 4, Matty Cahalane..

U14 Div3 PoolA Game

St. Brendan’s 34

St Annes 23

St. Brendans were at home against St. Annes for their first game of the season. Brendans got off to the better start with Jack Clapham on fire scoring 6 points in the first quarter aided by his speed on the fast break.

Liam Kingston added another from the free throw line making it 7 to St. Anne’s 2 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter continued in the same vein with Garry Lynch scoring 6 pts for Brendans, Matthew Hussey adding another fine basket and Graham Sheehy a point from the free throw line.

The Brendans defence held St. Annes to a single point but they really fought back and found their form in the 2nd half. While Brendans Sam McCarthy got two baskets from his hard work under the boards and Nelly Olanrewaju secured an offensive rebound and put it straight back in the basket.

St. Annes got 10 points in this quarter due to pressure on Brendans passing and some explosive fast breaks. It was all to play for in the final quarter. St. Annes got the first two baskets really closing the gap.

However Ryan McHugh scored 4 lovely baskets and Graham Sheehy added 2 to secure the game for Brendans on a scoreline of 34 to 23.
