Boys U14 Div

Gneeveguilla 39 St.Brendan’s 21

The Boys’ U14 Division 2 league campaign continued this weekend with a trip away to a physically powerful Gneeveguilla side in Rathmore. The first quarter was a close affair with both sides taking time to settle. It ended with the hosts leading by 5 points to 2, St. Brendan’s opening basket being scored by Andrew Wallace.

Gneeveguilla put their stamp on the game in the second quarter registering 13 unanswered points giving themselves a comfortable cushion at half time. St. Brendan’s came out battling strongly in the third quarter lead by Coren Hughes who had a fantastic game, registering 9 points for the visitors. Strong defensive play by Cian Griffin and Donal O’Sullivan restricted Gneeveguila’s scoring with Jack Doyle controlling the play as the team’s point guard. The fourth quarter was another tight affair with Dean Farrell and Tom Flavin playing strong defensive roles. They were well assisted by Simon Carey and Jack Doyle who kept applying pressure, whilst Joshua Roche and Fiachra O’Connor battled valiantly in an effort to keep their hosts at bay. This quarter saw the hosts out-score St. Brendan’s by 12 points to 8. Gneeveguilla ran out comfortable winners in the end but our boys did themselves proud, never letting their heads go down and battling hard until the final whistle. Well done to one and all. Training is at the usual times this week.

Final result Gneeveguilla 39 St. Brendan’s 21.
Boys U12 Div 2

St. Brendan’s 25 Ballybunion Wildcats 17

The boys U12 team recorded their second league win of the season at home against Ballybunion Wildcats last Sunday.  Ballybunion were first to score but Brendan’s settled and worked hard as a team to equalise. They continued to move the ball fast out of defence and picked off some nice scores giving us a 14pts to 7 lead at half time. Ballybunion came back strong to narrow the margin going into the last quarter before we hit a purple patch to go ahead and run out winners on a final score line of 25 – 17. Team: David Scally, Shane Cotter, Brian O’Donnell, Shane Kelly, Kieran, Seán Barrett, Rory Clifford, Eoghan Bradshaw

St. Brendan’s 31 TK Vixens 7

Our U11’s had a good start to the season with a convincing win over TK Vixens in Athea. After a strong start Brendan’s led 17-0 at the end of the 1st quarter. After we made some substitutions TK Vixens came back into the game but we kept going and led 17-3 at the half. TK Vixens started well in the 3rd and had the first couple of scores but we rallied and got the better of them and brought a 25-7 lead into the final quarter. The fourth quarter played out much like the first with some good scores and impressive defence. The final score was St. Brendan’s 31 TK Vixens 7.

The St. Brendan’s Boys U10 squad with their coach Joanne Walsh at the Basketball Blitz in Duagh last Sunday

St. Brendan’s U10s 2016-2017 campaign got off to a very impressive start with a great performance at the Duagh blitz on Sunday. The team ranging in age from 7 to 10 years put together a tremendous performance over their two matches. Led by captain Jack Canty, Brendan’s put in a great display of teamwork that led to some great scores and fantastic defence in the first game. The second game saw Brendan’s come under a little pressure but that didn’t put a stop to their winning attitude. Winning the first and second game has given Brendan’s fierce confidence moving into the next blitz. The foundations of a great team have been established and we look forward to building on our success over the coming weeks. Well done to all the boys who put in a great effort.
