RESULTS
Boys U14 Div 2

Rathmore 37 St Brendans 22
The Boys’ Under 14 Division 2 league campaign continued this weekend with a trip away to Rathmore on Sunday. The home side got off to the better start registering a couple of quick baskets, however St. Brendan’s didn’t panic and managed to put together a sequence of good passes before Donal O’Sullivan eventually opened the score.

Cian Griffin was once again very solid in defence and Tom Flavin caught some great rebounds to restrict the hosts and prevent them from doing any further damage.  The quarter ended with the home team leading by 10 points to 4.

The second quarter was a very even affair and saw some great defensive play by Jack Doyle (Scoil Eoin) and Fiachra O’Connor. Ian Begley was perhaps the team’s most influential player in this quarter and he used his height to great effect by catching a number of super rebounds. He was assisted in this regard by some good passing from Joshua Roche who was introduced after the early withdrawal of the injured Simon Carey.

Ian also managed to score a couple of baskets which meant that the deficit was still only 6 points at half time (14-8). St Brendan’s most prolific quarter came in Q3 where they outscored their hosts by 11 points to 8. Coren Hughes opened his account with 2 well taken scores and Donal O’Sullivan also added a further 2 baskets to his tally. Dean Farrell and Ian Begley rebounded well with the result that St. Brendan’s were only trailing by 3 points at the end of the 8 minutes (22-19).

Unfortunately, the 3 point deficit was as close as St. Brendan’s got to home side as a sequence of turnovers early in the 4th quarter. Rathmore went on to register a number of unanswered baskets which saw their confidence grow and helped them to close out the game. St. Brendans did continue to fight and drew a number of fouls however they could only manage one free throw and one basket from point guard Jack Doyle (Gael Scoil) which resulted in a total tally of 3 points for Q4.

The teams were very evenly matched for most of the game and the final score did not reflect how close an encounter it actually was. It ended on a final scoreline of Rathmore 37 St Brendans 22.

GARVEY’S TRALEE WARRIORS

The Garvey’s Tralee Warriors continued on their winning ways in the Superleague campaign with a 87-80 win over DCU Saints in the DCU Arena last Sunday. The Warriors continue to sit fourth on the table on 36 points but have now played three games more than their big rivals for a playoff position in Pyrobel Killester. Killester were unable to stop Griffith Swords Thunder’s match to National Cup success on Saturday night succumbing to 72-51 defeat. Having beaten the Warriors in Round 2, the Swords side captured the cup crown in some style, and will visit Tralee for a Superleague battle on the 4th March. In the meantime the Warriors will need to secure all three Superleague points when they host the beaten cup finalists Killester in the next big Saturday night game in Tralee on the 11th February. Make a date for the diary and don’t miss out on what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
