St. Brendan’s 81 KCYMS 66

St. Brendan’s ended the 2016/17 season on a high with a hard fought but well deserved win over rivals KCYMS in the Div 1 Cup final in Castleisland on Friday night. Both sides featured players that had enjoyed Champions Trophy and League Cup success the previous weekend in Letterkenny with Fergal O’Sullivan, Darren O’Sullivan and Paul McMahon all playing major roles for Brendan’s while Declan Wall, Garny Garcia Nivar and Ignas Siyanas backboned the KCYMS side. The game started brightly for both teams and in a tight opening quarter Brendan’s took a narrow lead of 20-17.

However it was the second quarter where the Tralee side laid the platform for victory adding 26 point to their tally while Killorglin, who were without the services of Andrew Fitzgerald, only managed 10. Brendan’s playmakers Fergal and Darren O’Sullivan controlled the tempo of the game during this period and with the aerial domination of Paul McMahon and finishing of Cathal O’Sullivan, the Tralee side took maximum advantage of their best period of the game. Jamie Lowham, Daniel Molyneaux and Darren O’Sullivan also chipped in with scores as the Brendan’s defence held firm to limit the KCYMS offensive plays. The sides went to the half time break with Brendan’s leading by 46-27.

The third quarter was a much closer affair but Brendan’s continued to build on their lead with Fergal O’Sullivan and Cathal O’Sullivan landing shots from outside and Paul McMahon working the inside lines kept the scoreline ticking over. Brendan’s took a 25 point lead into the final quarter. Killorglin regrouped and came out fighting in the last 10 minutes firing 26 points in the quarter with Declan Wall landing a number of three pointers and Garny Garcia Nivar busy at the board.

The Killorglin side cut the defecit to just ten points with 2 minutes on the clock. Despite that Brendan’s held their nerve with Robert O’Sullivan providing crucial defensive cover with a number of steals and with Killorglin in foul trouble Paul McMahon and Cathal O’Sullivan made the most of the KCYMS indiscipine to land the resulting free throws. Killorglin battled right to the end but ultimately the winning margin of 81-66 just about reflected Brendan’s dominance of the decider.
