ST. BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB
Men’s Div 1 County League
St Brendan’s 76-52 KCYMS
St Brendan’s hosted KCYMS last Sunday in Moyderwell Hall. We started the game at an intense pace scoring 12 points without a reply.
That work rate continued throughout the quarter and thanks to 17 first quarter points from Kieran Donaghy we led 26-10 after the first 10 mins. KCYMS who compete at National League level reacted well and started a fight back.
Baskets from cousins Fergal and Darren O’Sullivan put the pressure back on Killorglin and we led 43-24 at the half time break.
A little complacency set in but great defensive work from Rob Mulcahy and Conor Donaghy ensured the lead of 19 remained in place after the 3rd period. The youthful 36 year old Kieran Donaghy proved once again in the final quarter how he competed at the highest level for so many years with great passing, rebounding and scoring.
Jason Quirke also impressed with some good steals and assists. We won the final quarter to extend the lead and ran out comfortable winners with a scoreline of 76-52.
Players and Scoreres: Kieran Donaghy 31, Fergal O Sullivan 25 (30 shots), Darren O Sullivan 12, Jason Quirke 4, Conor Donaghy 2, Rob Mulcahy 2, Nathan Roche.
We would like to congratulate Killorglin on their National League success to date and best of luck for the rest of the year flying the flag for Kerry Basketball. We would also like to thank The Castle Bar for there continued support and to new club sponsors Paddy Power.

St Brendan’s 43-32 TK Cougars
Our U14s hosted Cougars last Sunday morning in the County League. After winning our first league game we hoped to keep a winning record at home.
Cougars started the game stronger and took an early lead. Rap Buivydas who dominated on the boards chipped in 4 pts along with 4pts from Jimi O Sullivan and a further 2 pts from Jack Bourke saw us lead 10-9.
Captain Enda O Connor put on an exceptional display in the 2nd quarter and with the help of Peter Kearns we led 22-11 at half time. TK Cougars hit back at the start of the 3rd period with some sloppy play from our boys the visitors closed the gap to 5 pts entering the last quarter of play.

St. Brendan’s 43
St. Marys 47
This local derby produced a really exciting game of basketball. The first quarter was evenly matched ending with St. Mary’s 10-9 up.
Mary’s totally dominated the 2nd quarter scoring 14 while Sean Dillane and Matthew Hussey each had a basket for Brendans.
At half-time Brendans were 11 points down. Quarter 3 Brendans played smarter and worked harder and with good hustling by Joshua Roche, Liam Kingston and Graham Sheehy set Garry Lynch off on a fast break.
He drove and dished to Liam Kingston who scored nicely. Graham Sheehy was fouled shooting and swished his two free shots. Shortly afterwards he had two fast break baskets. Sheehy, Lynch and Kingston had 19 points in the quarter to Mary’s 8, tying the game at 32 each.
Quarter 4 was neck and neck and when Jack Clapham was fouled while shooting, he made the shot and the free throw which followed. Mary’s ball carrier responded with a basket followed shortly by 2 successful free throws.
Sam McCarthy got a basket but Mary’s again responded. Jack Clapham, Daniel Bowler and Graham Sheehy all scored and with a minute to play Mary’s were up by a basket. The visitors defence withheld the pressure and the game finished with a 47-43 win for Mary’s in what was a really good game of basketball.
Players & scorers: Graham Sheehy 13; Garry Lynch 9; Liam Kingston 8; Jack Clapham 5; Sean Dillane 2; Sam McCarthy 2; Daniel Bowler 2; Matthew Hussey 2; Denis Malihin; Joshua Roche; Ryan McHugh; Declan Mangan.
U12 County League Basketball
Glenbeigh Falcons 19 St Brendan’s 29
A good opening quarter dominated by Edward Sheehy with 4 pts ably assisted by 2 pts each from the ever improving Cillian Litchfield and Jack Doyle saw us lead 8-3 entering the 2nd period. Glenbeigh to their credit came into the game in the 2nd quarter & outscored us 6-5 with our scores coming from Simon Carey (2), Koren Huges (2) and Jack Doyle (1) giving us a half time of 13-9. Scores in the 2nd half came from Donal O’Sullivan (2), Jack Doyle (4), Cian Griffin (2), Edward Sheehy (2), Simon Carey (2) & a superb breakaway basket from Andrew Wallace which was crucial as Glenbeigh had reduced our lead to just 4 pts at that stage.
While scoring 29 pts against a strong Glenbeigh team was pleasing it was the defensive performance of the entire team that is worth mentioning. Donal O’Sullivan & Cian Griffin, along with Simon Carey & Tom Flavin dominated the rebounds, against far bigger opponents.
Koren Huges, Jack Doyle & Cillian Litchfield also put in incredible performances in this half. The defensive work rate of Edward Sheehy & Jack Doyle throughout the game was immense. There is a willingness to fight for every loose ball by each & every player on the team. This was never more evident than in the final quarter when the character of this young team shone through and saw them win by a 10pt margin on a final score of Glenbeigh 19 St. Brendan’s 29.

Hula Hoops Basketball Ireland U18s National Cup
Well done to our U18s who competed in the Pool stages of the U18 National Cup last weekend in Letterkenny. They got their campaign off to a winning start with a 43-39 win over the hosts Letterkenny Blaze. However defeat to local rivals St. Mary’s Castleisland by 61-35 was followed with another loss to a very good Killester outfit from Dublin. To their credit St. Mary’s went onto face the invincible Neptune from Cork in the Final of the Pool but it was the Leesiders that prevailed easily with a 100-53 win. Thanks to the coaches and to both Charles and Pa for transporting the St. Brendan’s troops on the long trek to Donegal and back.
