ST. BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB NOTES

KABB VITHIT Mens Div 1 Final

St. Brendan’s 90 KCYMS 80

.

St. Brendan’s added the Men’s Division 1 Cup to the club collection with a very impressive team performance against a determined KCYMS side in front of a big crowd in Killarney.

The sides went score for score in a lively high scoring opening quarter with Rap Buivydas landing a hat trick of three pointers to add to scores from Padraig Fleming and Kieran Donaghy.

KCYMS responded with baskets at the other end from Ivan Bogdanovic, Daniel Jokubaitis, Eoin O’Sullivan and Declan Wall to edge Killorglin ahead by two at quarter time. Both sides added 25 to their scores in the second quarter as the intensity level lifted and Ronan Fitzpatrick, O’Sullivan and Wall fired scores for KCYMS while Brendan’s replied through Fergal O’Sullivan, Paul McMahon and Donaghy but the Tralee side still trailed by two at the long break 49-51.

The third quarter again was a tight affair with both teams looking to seize the initiative but just like the first two quarters there was nothing between the sides.

The impressive Eoin O’Sullivan and Declan Wall were in range again for KCYMS but Donaghy, Buivydas and McMahon pegged the Killorglin side back with some great scores. The sides turned down the stretch with Brendan’s taking a five point lead.

In the final quarter Brendan’s asserted control and in a big final push the Tralee side pulled away with Kieran Donaghy leading the charge with a powerful individual display along with Darren O’Sullivan adding a couple of scores and Buivydas again showing his considerable talent.

Eoin O’Sullivan, Wall and Jokubaitis provided the KCYMS response but it wasn’t enough to retain their title and Brendan’s ran out winners by 90-80 in the end.

KABB VITHIT Mens Div 2 Final

St. Brendan’s 54        St. Paul’s 47

.

St. Brendan’s made it two from two Mens Senior Cups with a deserved 54-47 win over St. Paul’s in a well contested decider. Brendan’s started well with Liam and Cathal O’Sullivan getting to the basket as well as Aaron Buckley but St. Paul’s also were in range through Shane Horgan and James Jones however Brendan’s led 12-9 at quarter time.

Simon Mitchell and Jason Quirke got in on the scoring for Brendan’s in the second but St. Paul’s responded with a 20 point haul with Horgan and Jones getting to the Brendan’s board and at half time the Killarney side had opened up a 29-20 lead.

The third quarter belonged to Brendan’s and in particular Rick Leonard. The former Tralee Tiger and Garvey’s Tralee Warrior was immense under the Paul’s board scoring 10 in the quarter despite the best efforts of St. Paul’s to try to keep their defence intact.

The final quarter saw Brendan’s full gain control of the contest and with Leonard, Quirke, Buckley and Ian Carey firing in scores, the Tralee side saw out the win with seven points to spare.

St. Brendan’s 47 Rathmore 35

St Brendan’s overcame a strong Rathmore side in Moyderwell last Sunday. When these 2 sides met in the cup earlier in the season the game went to extra time before Brendan’s emerged victorious by a single point.

So it was always going to be a close battle and certainly the first quarter played out as expected with a single point separating the teams 14 – 13 to Rathmore. Brendan’s had scores from Sean, Shane K, Olaf and Brian while Kieran Collins, Padraig Moynihan and Shane Daly delivered for Rathmore.

Brendan’s began to dominate the 2nd quarter. Scores from Kieran, Conor, Aaron, David and a great outside shot from Shane C before half time saw us lead by 7, 29 -22.

Padraig Moynihan and Fionn Murphy were to the fore for Rathmore but 2 from 2 from the line by Steven gave Brendan’s a 10 point lead going into the final quarter.

Brendan’s tremendous team effort and the character shown by all 10 players, all of whom got on the scoresheet gave us a well deserved victory with a final scoreline of 47 – 35.

Team: Conor Cronin, Shane Kelly, Shane Cotter, Aaron Nolan, David Scally, Olaf Michalczuk, Steven Barrett, Brian O’ Donnell, Kieran Aurellano and Sean Naughton.
