Inter Kenmare 0-1 Park Fc
Following their defeat to Castleisland last time out, Park were presented with a second tough task away to undefeated league leaders, Inter Kenmare on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon last. The first half was a tight affair with Park shading the possession stakes but with Inter always dangerous on the break and from set-pieces. In fact, Park were indebted to keeper, Patrick Kearney who was always alert to any danger and whose handling was assured all through.
However, Park’s central defenders Kevan Foley and Gavin Wadding were rock solid and tuned in from the outset with Seán Tansley imperious in his organisational and positional sense. Park were also dangerous up front with Darcy O’Sullivan moving into the front line for Donagh O’Brien who had been ill during the week and the first chance of the game fell to his partner John O’Brien who was the victim of a bobble as he was about to shoot and this allowed the keeper to save down to his right. Park’s wing men were also causing problems for the home side with Ronan Duggan starting for another victim of illness, Shane McGinley. Duggan bombed forward at every opportunity and forced the keeper into another smart save at the foot of the post.
Tomás Leen also raided with intent down the right flank while covering well when Inter were in possession. The breakthrough eventually came when skipper Gary Howard pressed forward on Inter’s kick out and Park worked the ball from right to left with Eamonn Sheehy on the end of the move and facing the homesters isolated right back. Sheehy feinted right but when the tackle came he had pushed the ball left and the penalty was inevitable. Rory Kelly was entrusted with the responsibility and he found the bottom right corner with precision. Inter pushed forward as the clock ticked down to the interval but Tansley, Wadding, Foley and Kearney in particular held firm. Park remained dangerous on the break though and Howard tested the Kenmare keeper with a stinging drive before eminent referee, Tom Kerrisk, brought a pulsating first half to a conclusion.
Park moved Sheehy into attack on the resumption with O’Sullivan switching to midfield, but their rhythm was disrupted when Duggan had to retire with a calf injury. However, the in-form McGinley proved an ideal replacement as Park never dropped their tempo. Both sides were going at it now with gusto and each had chances to score with O’Brien again forcing a fine save from Inter’s keeper which was more than matched by Kearney’s flying save to prevent what looked like a certain equaliser. Kenmare were throwing everything at the Tralee lads now but Park were ever-dangerous on the counter with Sheehy and O’Brien always a threat.
They looked to have sewn the game up when substitute, Donagh O’Brien’s sublime touch in a crowded penalty box picked out Rory Kelly who produced a super finish that was ruled out for offside. Inter pressed to the end but Park grafted relentlessly without the ball, yet remained composed when in possession and ran out deserving 1-0 winners at the finish of this effervescent contest played in great spirit in very testing conditions.
**Special thanks to the Inter mentors who were so helpful with Ronan Duggan’s injury and also to Eddie Sheehy who ferried Ronan back to Tralee** . Park: Kearney, Leen, Duggan, Tansley, Wadding, Foley, Sheehy, Howard, O’Sullivan, John O’Brien, Kelly , Donagh O’Brien, McGinley.
