THE Skills Plus Group from St John of God’s Services on Ashe Street were in Tralee Garda Station on Friday morning for the final part of their Streetwise Programme.

This programme was developed by the Choices Department of St John of Gods Services in association with An Garda Síochána.

The training programme is delivered by a member of An Garda Síochána with additional support from Service Providers in a community location for maximum impact.

The training offers the learners an opportunity to:

·         Explore the role of the Garda Síochána in Irish Society

·         Exercise greater vigilance in terms of their own safety at home and out in the community and to be effective in accessing emergency services as appropriate

·         Develop awareness of the concept of a crime

·         Develop awareness of the meaning and consequences of vandalism

·         Foster greater awareness around the legal consequences of substance misuse

·         Be aware of their rights vis-á-vis law enforcement

·         See at first-hand what happens within a Garda Station

Members of the group were taken on a guided tour of the station and then they received certificates of attendance for their course.
